It just seems like gems/slots from lots of other RPGs (Diablo, Torchlight, Monster Hunter, etc...)
I hope color wise it shows up on your equipment, like how the gemmed accessories show their stone color.

Which all came out well after FFVII(1997) >.>
Sockets were not in Diablo 1 IIRC, only 2. Which came out in 2000
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
Right but that doesn't change the fact that the system exists in that game, as well as other games. I wasn't saying anything bad about it, just that it seems more like those than FF7's materia system considering in FF7 the slotted materia gave you access to abilities. Here it seems like specific stat boosts instead, which are more like gems in other games.
I agree with that, either to somehow show it physically on your armor, or even have the option of it adding an "aura" to the equipment it is on.
Also, the Materia name wouldn't bother me, but I wouldn't mind Magicite either(FF6 being my favorite and all), or something more aligned with the current FFXIV universe, like Aether Gems, or Aether Stones.
