If they were going to re-use a term. They could re-use Magicite as it has been used in multiple games now.

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)

It's a feeble attempt to appeal to a demographic that would buy a bag with dog poo inside it if it had FFVII and Cloud's face stapled on it.
Reading Bay's post, it sounds more like Lineage II's enchant system with a timesink of "attachment points" tossed in. The thing about stacking materia at the very bottom is a very big cause of concern, too.However! If this system they're putting into XIV creates nothing more then little slottable stat boosts, then yes, they might as well call it the Magicite system, and in fact it would be more appropriate. Here's hoping, however, that it's not quite as simple as that.

See how easy this is? You should quit while you're ahead.
Calling it magicite makes even less sense because the whole "equip and unequip stones to your weapons/armor to increase stats n' stuff" fits more with the materia system, which was "equip and unequip stones to your weapons/armor to increase stats n' stuff". Magicite has much more to do with "magical creatures having their forms and power crystallized into a stone that you equip unto your character". That isn't what they're doing with this system.
Plus, materia rolls off the tongue much easier than magicite.

In all fairness, Kefka's face wouldn't sell as wellSee how easy this is? You should quit while you're ahead.

Also, Materia was about more then just stats, much more. They primarily added abilities, spells, or summons, and also happened to increase the stats that supported said new powers.
Magicite was, especially on the surface, mostly about summoning, granted. Yet each Magicite also increased a particular stat for the character it was equipped on if they leveled up with it on. Handled from early enough, you could create quite the buffed up characters, to the point where the Summons actually took a backseat.
Hence why I'm curious to see what, exactly, the system in XIV can do.

But Magicite wasn't as awesome of stuff.
Honestly, I don't care that the terms come from VII, or VI, or any other FF game, it only matters that the Materia system previously created was a great thing.

Indeed. When you use a name coming from FFVII you're stepping in sacred territory. If the system won't be similar i do would rather it having a different name.
I'd love to see the original materia system here tho. IMO it could be expanded to crazy limits in an MMO...imagine every piece of gear having its slots with many combinations and stuff. I would prefer this way much more than they having static secundary stats...
Also, it would make easier to convert every single stuff they decide taking from other game to this one. Lemme pop an example:
If they wanted Byakko Haidate Here...it had DEX+15 Haste+5% and Lightning+50. Assuming elemental conversion (lightning-based attributes into lightning slots, wind-based attributes into wind slots) it would just become an gear with 2 Lightning and 1 Wind slots. As Endgame stuff, add another wildcard slot (that can receive any element), link 1 lightning and 1 wind to the wildcard and that's it! Sometimes it could even end with a bouild superior to the original haidate since it would be up to the player decide what would be taking that slot...they could add, as example, instead of the 50 lightning some critical hit rate bonus, instead of haste some evasion, instead of DEX some accuracy and so on...the possibilities would be unlimited!
