Haha, I meant in terms of mainstream appeal, the direction they took is their own fault.
FF13 was one of the worst in the series for me, but it still made them a load of money so can't be all that bad.
They should have kept Sakaguchi![]()

Nah they didn't want to pay him to surf in hawaii all day.
I have to thank Square-Enix for the amazing job they have done recreating Final Fantasy XIV from Scratch. Especially the inclusion of Missing Genders which we petitioned for in good faith. This was proof to us players that the Developers are truly Sympathetic to our requests and that being honest and vocal can pay off with the amazing characters we have who are Female Roegadyn, Male Miqote, and Female Highlanders. Thank You SE, Thank You Community Team, Thank You Yoshi-P.
Lmao! The FFVII Card!! Ah SE! How have you fallen!!!
Eitherway, that materia system sounds a lot like the armor slots/get system we got in wow.
I like it, this game is more wowish each month :O

Except the system is older then WoW because its been in more games then WoW? Hell The Materia system is older then Diablo which is where half of wows systems came from anyway.

I cannot believe you people are comparing this system to WoW. And this is not just from FFVII either, they also did something very similar to this in FFIX and FFXI, except it was for abilities, not for stats, but it is the same idea. If I am not mistaken, FFIX was released before WoW. In FFIX Weapons and Armors would have abbilities and magic spells attached to them. The way you would go about learning those spells would be to fight with the weapon or armor on and earn "attatchment points". Once you unlocked all points you were able to use the spells and/or abilities granted from that weapon/armor anytime you wanted. In this sense, they are trading magic and abilities for an actual "skill orb" that you can attach to other items. That is pretty much the same idea, and while it is not magic or abilities, the name Materia makes sense, that and they said they were not set on that name anyway.

If I were to state an opinion, I'd say rename it.
While I loved FFVII, I somewhat detest how everything Square Enix does nowadays revolve around that game. But honestly, it's not a big deal.
EDIT:
Sonic_the_Hedgehog: I think those are good suggestions. They'd stay along the foundations of FFXIV, and keep the atmosphere. I think what bothers me with Materia is that it breaks with the feeling of FFXIV.
But then, we already know that it's not necessarily the final title.

If they were going to re-use a term. They could re-use Magicite as it has been used in multiple games now.

* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
