Whilst I'd agree that it might be a good idea to consume weapons/armour, I think the whole 'oversized weapon pool' thing would eventually sort itself out once we got new content and the current range became less desirable, and perhaps alternative and cheaper synths than weapons and armour themselves are made available.

youd still have a wealth of level 50 items no one needs. This system will basically create a destruction of item system thats voluntary, though, i wonder are they going to get rid of item durability with this? hmmm

I thought you would build up ap on gear and they would give you materia slots for extra enhancements. just speculation. it was a vague statement in my opinion.

Just want to point out that Bayohne mentioned weapons and armor .... I surely hope that tools are included in that.

This way, EVERY class can participate in creation of materia. One possibility / hope / speculation is that the experience that went to the now-defunct physical level is used to create the "attachment points" needed to convert said item into materia.

Also, using an NPC (who presumably charges gil) to convert the items into Materia is a wonderful (imho) new gil sink. This system creates both a gil sink AND an item sink...

materia system was just your magic and stuff in ff7, we already have that, were just missing traits and ablitys for each class like right now its too universal Job specific.
if they add something like that it should be none item system should let it be made another way, cuz just going to the markets and buying one is blah and typical, should be like ff8 draw mako from points on the map then build the materia you want from a list your character makes from quest then have that materia forever then you can upgrade it later or level it up. that would be more RPG and something you can build off of.
    --just my version.

I like how it sounds so far, though I still have a few nagging worries. As some others have mentioned, there needs to be some sort of limiting factor to prevent people from turning a single weapon or piece of armor into a materia factory. Whether the item is consumed, the stats are stripped from the item giving a weaker materia or none at all subsequent times, or if there's a counter system much like enchantments in XI, something needs to be in place to promote the use of several armors and weapons as well as prevent spamming materia creation. To balance it out perhaps allow people to erase their built up materia, resetting their attachment points, to try again for a better one, though ultimately yielding only one or two actual materia.

There's obviously more that needs to be detailed about the system, but given proper implementation I bet it'll be a really fun system. Especially if there are tons of materia types and tons of factors that attribute to materia creation perhaps including job, enemy types defeated, types of attacks, etc. Making that perfect materia should be an event in and of itself!

This reminds me of FF9. You equip a weapon or armor and you fight with it equipped. AP is gained and a little bar is filled. When the bar fills you get a stone with a stat corresponding with the equipped weapon/armor. I see it as random materia output, like a Silver Scepter can create MP+1% or Water+2 Materia.

I'm sorry for the vague comment that's sparked the debate, so I'll clarify. I'll also edit the original post with the following.

By using the armor and weapons that you equip yourself with, you will generate "attachment points"* and when your attachment points reach 100% you will be able to convert that weapon or armor into "materia."

Do we know if Materia will allow use to learn or equip abilities or traits?

Right now, I see that it will have stat effects, which is nice, but it would be interesting if some rare forms of materia came with traits or abilities attached as well.

    Just a thought/question.
