    MMO Launches

I'm not one to post often... but I can't help but be blown away by the amount of people complaining about a pre-launch/launching of a MMO. I been in my fair share of MMO launches, and this by far as been the ea so i was wondering how many people here have done any other MMO Launch and if so list the game you have played at Launch.

    Lord of the Rings
    Dungeon and Dragons
    Tabula Rasa
    SW The Old Republic
    Star Wars Galaxies

Oh here comes the typical, "I'm accustomed to crap service, so everyone else should be too." argument again. Just because some mmorpg in the past had a crummy launch does not mean it's okay when a future one has one. Companies should study other companies past mistakes and successes, and then build off of those things. They should be held to a higher standard. It makes me absolutely sick when people try to attack others because they are not accustomed to a lifestyle of disappointments. People paid hard earned money for this game and they shouldn't have to settle because some company made someone else do it in the past.

Well its true there are almost always sever troubles on MMO launchers, but that doesn't make it any less frustrating or annoying.

It's interesting so many are so willing to defend this type of laziness on behalf of developer. Especially when this is Square Enix's last chance in the MMO space and first week reviews/word of mouth have a lot to do with making or breaking a game in the long run.

It will probably go something like this:

If D3 is any example, then after early access and come release the problems only got worse because the size of the crowds basically doubled. So here is the way the next few days will go.

Saturday: Unable to login, servers perpetually down, unplayable once in.

Sunday (today): Difficulties logging in, glitches everywhere, almost playable.

Monday: Login getting smoother, playable for stretches at a time, but not a full day, occasional hiccups throughout the day.

Tuesday: Release, crowds stream in, see Saturday.

    Wednesday: See Sunday

    Thursday: See Monday.

    Friday: See Monday, again.

Saturday: Weekend, pop doubles again, see previous Saturday.

I played Lineage 2 at launch, it went horrible. Login issues were the same as this. Spent hours spamming the login button to only be given an error afterwards.

Star Wars Galaxies was broken for awhile where you couldn't register and then couldn't play.

World of Warcraft had insane queue times and issues staying connected at the start.

Guild Wars 2 had to actually stop selling the game for a couple of days because they had so many problems. The trading post was pretty much non-existent for the first week, the mail system was disabled, parties were crashing/not appearing, you were stuck in Overflow for seemingly ever, and never actually able to login to your actual home world (while that made the game playable, it also made it impossible to do anything with friends), and people were having their accounts hacked the first day, which caused a ton of issues with creating accounts and the e-mail security issues.

Just because it happens doesn't make it right. You would think by now that people would learn from other failed launches, and take all the extra precautions to prevent it from happening to their own game.

Hey guys, did you hear about the launch of Final Fantasy XIV? - That went really smoothly!

    ...in japan.

The very fact this game has launched without issue in Japan, yet has been nigh unplayable so far in EU/NA proves that a smooth MMO launch is possible, and furthermore is within the capabilities of Squeenix if they had put a little more effort into it.

True, but not all games are built the same... my two cents on that.

Played Swtor at EA and it was certainly much smoother than this for me. There were issues but nothing game breaking for my experience personally. EA here has been nom stop gamebreaking errors.

And what that other guy said, it's 2013 and this game isn't really trying anything new gameplay wise. This probably could have been avoided had the game been stress tested for more than 3 days. People need to stop being so conditioned to having to endure a poorly planned/tested product and raise their standards sometimes. Just because it was okay 10 years ago doesn't mean it needs to be now. It doesn't just apply to MMO's. Tons of single player games come out rushed and are buggy messes.
