When Rift was released they had tons of servers. It made their launch smoother but after a month all those servers became ghost towns. Eventually they had to merge the servers. I rather put up with congestion now than having low population for 99% of the rest of the game time.
If people are quitting over this then they don't understand MMOs. What's a couple of days or weeks compared to 5-10 years of game play.
But that would be too easy.Perhaps a good way to help a bit with the server population problem:
1) SE makes new servers, or select lowest populated servers.
2) SE Gives people the option to transfer to those low populated servers for free.
If this kind of service is offered to players, I am sure many people would transfer.
Some people want to play with their friends, no matter the server. Some just wouldn't mind transferring.
I am sure this wouldn't completely fix the issue, but it might help a bit.
What do you folks think?
What worries me is the old 'build it and they will come' idea. Say they build more servers, which I agree should happen, one of the problems of urban development is designing something that everyone can use when they want. You can not fix interstate 405 by adding more lanes, it will just fill up again with an even larger traffic jam. I'm worried that if SE does add more servers, as people start to fill those new servers up, we will be right back at the same problem, only bigger.
I'd be game for server move if necessary. where it stands now friends of mine who I talked into joining can't play with me because they wouldn't be able to get on my server as it is.
Earlier today you could only create a character on 4 servers and Faerie was on of them so I did......
And I was still getting the same error as everyone else all night this is supposedly a new server and it's already full.........
I just want my character off Gilgamesh but heck where can we actually transfer too that's not gonna be constantly full besides a new server or JP ones........
Please give us new servers and transfers so I can actually play with my friends who can't login/create on Gilgamesh......

Agree.
Would it be so hard to make temporary servers and split the population somehow? I mean I know having it now with 2k people AFK all night long and 100k not able to log in is logical somehow?
Yea that is pretty dumb having afkers stay logged in.. Final Fantasy XI had the same thing where people could stay logged on forever, well until the server is shutdown. It was dumb back then and even more so now.
While this does seem like a great idea, splitting the server population is the main issue. Unless they can code us a request transfer ticket and have it actually work on the fly, deciding how to split the population of a server with established linkshells and free companies would be rather difficult. If done at random people would end up on different servers then thier friends. If they do have us request a transfer ticket it would take more then 1 night to set up. They had nearly a month between beta 3 and 4 to transfer the requested transfers the first time. Asking them to do the same instantly is not really a good solution which could go horribly horribly wrong.
Agree with OP 100%. The only problem with it is that it makes too much sense. So therefore it will be ignored.
The server I'm in is just way too congested. Fates are not even a challenge because it just a ton of people running around tagging mobs.
