    Best spot for mining gems

Ok, so I'm a bit of a selfish miner. Most of my mined goods never get sold - I feel compelled to value-add and level up a craft before things go on the market. This made me guilty of selling things like iron nuggets rather than iron ore and limonite.

Right now, I'm trying to push my goldsmith and, obviously, if I'm going to take miner to 50, it would make sense if that mining were not random and supported my crafts.

I'm having a good time polishing these higher-level gems up currently and want to collect them for making the ever-popular rings down the track. I'll be moving on to mythril smelting soon too.

So question is, to the more experienced miners out there, which grade 5 mining area would you consider best for collecting raw gems and which would be best for collecting mythril?

Coerthas is good for gems, but to get all six elemental types of gems you have to visit all four areas. Each of the areas has different types of gems. Mythril can be retrieved in any of the four grade 5 areas (and at a perhaps lower rate in grade 4). The only issue I have with Coerthas mining is that there are only four mining points active instead of five, so it occasionally means a bit more legwork.

On the plus side, Dragonhead has an NPC merchant so you sell off the sluff gathered materials instead of dropping it on the ground.

    Best of luck!

Thanks for that. I'll go with Cörthas for a bit.

Also, I've been noticing that gems generally seem to require a gentler swing ie: smaller circles on the hot/cold bar. Does this match up with what other people are finding?

that's correct, gems seem to always require a minimal strike.

As far as money goes, often the L3 areas are usually better for gems. The L3 area gems make the top tier rings, while you get the same gems from L4 and 5 areas, and because you get to L4 areas in the high 20s, a LOT of the L4,5 gems get mined while grinding, while not many L3s do.

Let's not forget that Goldsmithing recipe changes are coming (presumably) at the next major patch, which will probably change the gems used in top tier accessories to what is now found at grade 5.
