SE has always tried to balance servers out. Even in FFXI they did it, except you never saw it... because you didn't have a choice of server... UNLESS you had a world pass from a friend who was already playing...

Sorry SE you should have stuck with that system, people could have made characters been placed wherever, and not been any wiser that there was a lock unless a friend was unable to buy a world pass.

What you created was a list of these servers everyone gets to look at but can't play on, and most feel they should have access to all of them no matter how full they are.

There are many ways to manage your game population, and your original system was probably the best and that system was 10 years old.

As a guild we voted on which server to join so that we could play together. Not being able to select the server unless we get a pass from a friend is too slow and tedious for an initial release of the game. Since most of the servers seem to have a problem, randomly putting people on servers based on load would not have solved the current load issue. I'm getting World full errors way before I even see a server list.

world passes were cheap, even back then 1k per, price went up slightly as server got more people. It wasn't that bad even on NA release to get enough for a small guild. specially since as more people got on the more you had helping you farm.

The world passes are archaic at this point. It's absurd that an MMO launch would need them, unless the alternative is this bizarre decision to simply block registration on a number of servers and randomly (and without warning) enable and disable registration on most others. Our guild is split because of this now. I can't believe they've dropped the ball so thoroughly when even their decade+ old server system was better. What a joke.
