Seen a few games that have prevented the flames from growing too big during these times.

The way its done, is with constant updates and moderators in the forums.

If you can't get it to work properly and you are "working" on it. Stop apologizing and tell us when its going to be fixed.

Sometimes (WoW reference) a blue post in a heated thread makes all the difference for an angry gamer.

SE you want to make your players feel acknowledged. Feel like there problems are being seen and worked on, you are, your doing maintenance but posting, hey thank you for posting, where currently having programers look into this, in a form of raging gamers, would definitely help settle people down.
You may be posting on launcher however many just go directly to forms for info, would be a great idea.
