It should be noted that not all crashes are caused by the same thing.

If underclocking the video card solves the problem, then you had bad/unstable hardware to begin with. If this is the case and the card is less than 1 year old, return/RMA it.

nVidia and AMD are not immune from defects, and unfortunately a bad GPU may not cause problems unless a very specific load is used. Sometimes it's just the RAM on the video card, which won't trip up any bugs in the software until something actually tries to use that chip. Just because a video card has 2GB of memory, doesn't mean the game is going to use it. Right now GPU-Z says FFXIV is using 882MB of the video card. Certain OEM brands are also known to cheat benchmarks ( http://www.tomshardware.com/news/MSI...ion,18013.html ) and as a result lower the life expectancy of the video card.

Not everyone who is crashing is getting the virtualcall error, and if you google search for "virtualcall" and game crash, you'll again get reports of nVidia cards doing this in other games. However the finger gets pointed at the game developer, not the video card vendor.
