Yep, that's definitely a translation mishap, it's a socketing system. Is that right? Turning your beloved items into materia sounds kinda odd. That's what I kinda thought he was saying at first, but I thought it would make sense that hes saying you can customize your favorite items with magic stones to change them, since that would basically be what materia is all about.
I did my own translation of that paragraph here:

PART2(more of a response)
Bahamut: Aren`t you supposed to be answering questions about the grand company,auto-attack,etc?
Mr Yoshida:
I am going to post on this topic later on.
The official info wil be released this week end or next week.
The development team is working on both the battle system and economy system(I will talk about this on the next producer letter)Again, players have different info they want depending on what class they play as. Also these classes are related to each other so showing info on one side might make people lost.
So it might look like we are doing too much of this and that, but we are actually checking the total balance through our revisal plan so i hope for your understanding!

"What are you doing Yoshi-san? It's two in the morning!"
"Can't sleep. I'm reading the forums. Thought I'd reply to this thread."
"Oh no, you can't do that! You have to write down any replies and send them to the proper channels so we can translate it to all of the game's official languages and release it at the same time so other people won't feel left out and abused!"
"You mean I can't just reply to a thread like a normal person? Why? Where was this in my contract?"
/end sarcasm
Sheesh people. We'll get the translations in good time. Please check all lollipops and juiceboxs at the door. I think you might have had a bit too much sugar today.
Edit: Aaaaand the translations came even as I wrote this.
Well, the problem all the japanese people were talking about was the Second hand problem. Is that right? Turning your beloved items into materia sounds kinda odd. Where people just continue to throw in the gear in the market after they don`t need it.
This lead to the drop of prices and crafters wanted something where there was a difference between new and 2nd handed items. So i think this Materia system answers this question, where battle classes use a particular weapon for a while(Until it`s like 0% perhaps)and then they can turn it into a materia borrowing the hands from gatherers and crafters.
So i think it isn`t something where players customise the weapon itself, but more of something where they keep changing their weapons into materias after they have used their weapons. This will solve the 2nd hand problem people are talking about and battle classes can keep moving forward by adding materia to their new weapon.

From my own understanding, you identified the problem correctly, but there has been a bit of a mishap in the translation of the method.Well, the problem all the japanese people were talking about was the Second hand problem.

I may be wrong but he's talking about socketing weapons with materias (that can be found by gatherers and socketed by crafters) in order to turn them into personal items (probably non transferable), that will acquire a sentimental value.
Of course I may be wrong, but that's what I got out of it.
Time to leveling my DoL then...
Aion Zwei - Masamune
I think it`s a combination of both our understanding. From my own understanding, you identified the problem correctly, but there has been a bit of a mishap in the translation of the method.

The socketing system you said + turning weapons/armors into materia.
Mr Yoshida said the item gatherers can get will be a catalyst(Syokbai =more like a container)
After reading your interpretation, i noticed that this is what it will be like.
Battle classes use their weapons like usual and when it comes to the point they will sell it they have 2 options.
1.Fix then chuck it in the market.
2.Turn it into a materia and get the container i said before from gatherers and then craft it yourself or get someone to craft it.
This will end up with a new weapon including a materia made from your original weapon.Just guessing.

Wait wait wait.
Let's see
The JAPANESE employee from a JAPANESE company should actually avoid posting in 'his' own game forums at the time he wants (for example: 2 AM) because some people believe that the JAPANESE guy MUST either speak English or not post at all? We're gonna limit Yoshida posts now?
Guys, just chill out. You're sounding ridiculous, really.
By the way, brb, Blizzard is selling Starcraft II here, gonna ask them to stop posting in ENGLISH in the ENGLISH battlenet forums and news before they can properly translate it to portuguese since it's outrageous to wait a bit for a translated post.

Yep, all we need is for them to actually *slow down* the information flow, right? The JAPANESE employee from a JAPANESE company should actually avoid posting in 'his' own game forums at the time he wants (for example: 2 AM) because some people believe that the JAPANESE guy MUST either speak English or not post at all? @pielun: thanks for offering an alternative translation. Guess we'll have to wait for the official one to be sure![]()
