Level to Access Retainers

I have a legacy character so I have it right from the start. But while I was progressing through the main storyline, it says I gain access to retainers after a certain lv20 quest in the quest line.

So the question is, do new characters have to level to lv20 before they can use retainers? Totally defeats the purpose of having mules then apart from the little 100 inventory space.

Yeah I couldn't use a retainer at all until i completed part of the main story quest line at 20. New players can buy from the Market board, but can't do anything else. The retainer NPC just turns you away if you try to hire one before then. It's kind of a pain to run out of space while leveling, but I guess it helps limit RMT in the long run.

How upsetting.

After going broke trying to complete my crafting journal, I strolled for almost an hour talking to all sorts of NPCs and fruitless global questions on how to market the items I was making. Thanks for posting this though and just ripping off the band-aid. I could feel the frustration of not knowing slowly overtaking my urge to continue crafting.

This is a step put in place to stop gil sellers dominating the economy, sadly its a poor example as all it does is punishes legitimate players.

Retainers should be unlocked at the same time as picking up a second class (ie level 10)

I understand where you're coming from, and I can definitely agree with this to a certain extent, however; when it comes to gathering classes I find it easier to have a higher level fighting class that can get the drops from enemies, or to save your ass from aggro if you can switch your gear fast enough. Then again, I still think of crafting like if was in FFXI where it was more skill based than class based and I do not know much about gathering classes beyond lvl ten at best.

So which quest is it that you have to complete to get the retainer quest? Is it the 3rd dungeon in the main mission?? Cause I am running out of space in my inventory lol. I also wish they had a better sort feature not just for inventory but also for the armoury chest

You unlock retainers very shortly after the third dungeon. I'm not sure if it's the same for all players, but mine unlocked after being sent to Vesper Bay (Ul'dah area) to talk to a certain NPC, which was the quest after the dungeons.

no you unlock them when you do the mainstory line when your adventurer's guild npc sends you to markets, thats how I unlocked mine, I guess its different for Legacy players then new players, I know it is mentioned when you join Scions that you can get access to retainers, but I thought that beat the purpose since I already had mine way before that, so I will ask the question I am meaning to ask, we were given 2 retainers in V1.0 when they got down to start fixing the game, are we still allowed to have 2 retainers for free or do we have to pay for 2nd one ? cos I havent tried for the fear of having to pay extra charge without knowing.
