Yeah. I think it is a very bad idea to sell anything you've crafted to vendors. Even if you are providing all the raw materials yourself, you only sell for 20gil or so. I am fairly certain that is at most, an 8 gil increase for most items considering the raw materials alone sell for 1-2 gil each. Note, these numbers are just from memory. If someone has some more accurate numbers, please tell me.

You should first hit one of your main battle classes to 50 and do the main storyline, after that you can gather some really nice stuff that goes for good price and live only from farming or gathering. To say the truth, you will start getting really good money once your able to take NM's or primals (ofc you need good raid party for that as well), than you can craft expensive stuff and sell it at astronomical prices.
    Hope that helps

For low levels, do side quests and leves. You can pick up and finish several leves in one location, so you won't have to teleport. You're not going to get rich, but you should easily make enough money to teleport when it's convenient.

At low levels, I wouldn't worry about spending money on the newest possible gear. You'll get most of the gear you need through class quests and side quests.

As for teleporting, don't forget the "Return" function. It's a free teleport every 20 minutes. And don't forget to Register the places you're going to often as "Favorite Locations," so the costs of teleporting are much lower.

As Isyaan suggested, level your crafts with Tradecraft leves. You get your materials for free. And in addition to getting XP for every item you craft, you get an XP bonus when you turn the materials to complete the quest.

If not, you need to gather your own materials. Otherwise, you're going to spend way, way more than you can make.

Keeping in mind that it is pretty much impossible for me to progress my story to even get a retainer thanks to the wonderful bugs plaguing this "early access" launch.

I appreciate the advice geared towards lower levels - unfortunately at the moment things I'm catching are 3-4gp ea at a vendor, so I'm going to be here a while... X-D

So our best bet for cool money is Crystal shards by mining?

You get ore & shards at the same time, sell both and you will get some starting money. But remember, this is time consuming. If you have only an hour ... better go and farm some stuff (you can farm elementals for shards also, they always drop some and they have pretty high chance for clusters)
