Correct me if I'm wrong, but you actually cant sell on the marketboard untill level 20 and after doing story quest to get a retainer? If this is true, then the only option is to sell to vendors or start spamming /sh to sell your gatherables I take it?

Correct, you need a retainer in order to sell on the market board.

Crafting and selling to the vendors however, is a BAD idea, as you will spend more money, and time crafting everything, then you will make selling to the venders. The best option for anyone, is to just not put to much into crafting until you have a retainer if your sole intent is to sell what you make. Gathering you can do no problem, you really wont spend much money gathering any way.

The level requirement is actually 17, though I guess most people are close to 20 when they reach the phase in main quest.
