Information about classes

I've seen various posts talking about having more than one class and as a completely new player I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction towards information about it or share their wisdom. I seem to be confused on how it works as I was under the impression that you start off with one class and it evolves into another when you reach a certain level. Any clarification would be greatly appreciated as I'm still a low level and have time to adjust if needed. Thank you!

After hitting level 10, complete your class quest. This unlocks the armory for you. Go to the guild of the class you want to become and apply there. Then, you just have to switch weapons to switch classes.

So I'm an arcanist now and would ultimately like to become a summoner. Did I choose the right starter class? What do I get to choose from at level 10? And thank you for the info

Yes, you did choose the right starter class to unlock Summoner. After completing your level 10 Arcanist class quest, you will unlock the Armory system and your guild master will inform you that you may no experiment with other classes.

Once the Armory system is unlocked, you can literally start joining whatever other battle, magic, crafting or gathering guild you would like! For example, you can join the Conjurers Guild and start unlocking healer actions like Protect and Cure. You can join any crafting guild you would like and start crafting items for yourself and selling them to other players (later on after you unlock the Retainer system).

You will also want to familiarize yourself with the gear set system. This is found in your Character window near your main equipped weapon/tool and it allows you to create sets of equipped gear per class you play and quickly swap between your unlocked classes!

At level 30 (and getting a subjob up to 15) you will get to pick the "job" you want. So starting with Arcanist as your class you can choose to pick SCH or SMN or both.

So when it comes to crafting, especially for my character, would leather working or weaving be more appropriate?

Summoner is a Job, not a class. To unlock summoner, level Arcanist to 30. Then, switch class to thamaturge (sp) and level to 15. You will then be able to do a quest to unlock summoner.

As an arcanist-based class/job, you will be using Alchemist for weapons (books), weaving for armor, and some later armor pieces may require leatherworking (although you will probably be able to buy most from the auction house). I would also suggest the botany gathering profession so you can collect hq materials for all of those crafts.

You don't need to craft your own gear until about lvl20, so it should be fine if you level up your arcanist to 15 first. When you finish the story quest for lvl 15, you should unlock airship travel. From there, you travel to Ul'dah or Gridania. The order doesn't really matter since the crafted armors will not matter until you're after lvl 20 anyway. Dungeon quests will also take you through the three starting areas too, so you can just follow that too.

You'll be able to get the thaumaturge job, the weaver job, and alchemist jobs in Ul'dah. Gridania will let you grab conjurer for easier solo leveling. Leatherwork and botany can also be obtained in Gridania.

Is there another way to get to another city from Limsa before lvl 15? i want to unlock some of the other classes

You can take the ship out of Limsa (it is on the western portion of the city, past the arcanist guild).

From there, you sail to Western Thanalan, walk to Central Thanalan (head South by South-east to Ul'dah, if you want), walk to South Shroud, walk to Central Shroud, and walk (Northerly direction )to Gridania.

It might have changed, but I'm not certain if you need a ship pass still to get on a sailboat like you need for the airships.
