    [dev1029] Environment collision detection

I think we need some collision detection in this game. To me Final Fantasy is about being immersed into the world, and when you can run right through mobs without blinking an eye, it just doesn't feel right.

I know that collision may be a problem with pc, but I think its important to have for everything else, npc, mobs and even some environments.

Take the tall grasses for instance, it would imo help to breath life into this game if you were slightly slowed down when running through tall grasses.

It just needs to be implemented to be slight collision for things like grass, and more like 75% collision for things like mobs, that way you can still move past them but it would be an inconvienience, just like irl!!

    edit, updated dev tags

Also would be nice to see some climb/fall animations for when we move over areas that we shouldnt be able to move across. When I am next to a cliff that is shoulder height I shouldnt be able to instantly teleport up there, but with the system as it currently is this is exactly what happens.

You're absolutely right, Obei. Some collision detection would stimulate some depth into this game. Walking through tall grass, climbing a snowy plain, faster speed when running down a hill. All of that would greatly feel the freedom of real life stimulation. I do not have a problem either with not being able to run through monsters. NPC and other people though? Yeah. I'd love to run through them. If you couldn't run through them, you'd probably be stuck in the markets or couldn't access your levequests since everyone stands there for hours.

All in all I think this is a great thread. This can sort out a lot of problems people are having with not falling down small cliffs, not scaling over simple mounds of dirt and debris, and yes even jumping, climbing, swimming, and everything else people wanted to see add more depth to the game.

I can't remember what game it's from (Lineage II, maybe?), but I remember reading that for their NPC/PC collision detection, if you ran at them for 5 seconds, you'd run through them. I think this would add that collision detection depth without giving fodder to griefers. Of course, I think it would be fun if they added something similar to Assassin Creed's 'Gentle Push' motion, where it nudges the NPC for a second so you could get past before resetting their position.

The 'inconvenience' of passing through other PCs was one of the things that really pissed me off in FFXI. It was especially annoying in crowded areas. I hated running through an AH area, coming to a halt, realizing that another player is loading there, then pushing through as they load in front of me, then seeing it happen again 2 steps later. I don't know how I feel about terrain collision detection, but I am against collision detection with PCs. If you want that real life feeling, then when I hit another PC, throw them off balance for a second and make them give me an automatic middle finger reply.

This. They actually removed PC collision detection from the game for this very reason. Market wards used to be painful about this, especially back when everyone just used the battlecraft ward.

I never said to put collision detection back on PC. I understand and agree.

However, collision detection can be a great way to feel like you are in the game.

The logical action would have been to get rid of the market wards instead.

Lol Rinsui, good point. Why just patch something up with a soggy band-aid?

They really need to start fixing things from the core and not just do "quick fixes" that make the game even worse.

Hopefully, and we will see if they can or not, but hopefully they will start to deliver proper fixes with 1.18
