How involved? I already finished the initial story quest and got my Airship Pass in P4 and I can't imagine it taking more than an hour or two running through on my Dragoon.

Well, you gotta go through all three first dungeons, then defeat Ifrit, then rescue a crashed airship and THEN you join your GC of choice.
If I remember correctly from phase 3, you need to defeat Ifrit and then you are sent to each City to watch some CS's then you go back to Minfilia and choose which GC you want to join.
I already finished the story quests up until level 20 on a separate class. Can I join the first dungeons through duty finder as a high level class or do I have to use a class of the appropriate level? Are the dungeons low enough level that I can just solo them as a 44 DRG? Is the Ifrit fight intended to be a group fight? Can I use the duty finder for it? Can I solo Ifrit as a 44 DRG?

All those requirements are Main Quest quests, actually. There are three quests, each asking you to go to a dungeon and kill the boss (dungeon can be entered only through the Duty Finder and is level-capped).
The Ifrit fight is also a storyline fight, quite a fair bit weaker than the actual for-rewards fight, it's a L20 group battle, it's also level-capped and can be entered through the duty finder.
So I can't just walk in the door of Tam Tara and do it myself? Can I level-sync my DRG through duty finder or do I have to use say my 20 Archer or Marauder?

Can definitely level-synch your character, doesn't matters what class you use to complete it
Thank goodness! Looks like I will be rather busy before I can ride my Legacy Chocobo tomorrow morning. Thumbs for all your help good sir!

I had this problem too, it was kinda frustrating.

interesting, i do remember during P4 i grabbed my legacy whistle, used it, and summoned my chocobo shortly after outside of town. i used the goobbue horn during P3, but that wasn't saved...
