A lot of the high level crafts require shark oil. Which also require two different sharks to craft. Did I misinterpret what Yoshi said or he just a freakin' liar?

Well I would not call him a liar. I don't think he said that fishing would not be important but rather that it would not have a big impact on the economy. There is a difference.
There is certainly going to be a market for fish once the game gets going. Not only ALC will need fish, also culinarians use them for many dishes.
What he has probably meant was that botting all day and then sell the fish to NPC will not be worth it. NPC prices should be pretty low.
We will have to see what impact fishing will have, but so far I think it looks pretty good all though it may not hold a lot of monetary value.

Yea, I believe also that we wont know the full impact until the game is released. I expect it will have a big impact in necessities for many other disciplines.
Yoshida simply did not have a full grasp on fishing. Fishing is confirmed to be a normal gathering class, just without any offhand gathering (yet, I hope), and slightly easier mechanics. While there are still the same fished items from 1.0 that were used in culinarian, alchemist, and various other crafting class recipes, they added a lot of "Junk" fish that serve no purpose yet, other than vendoring for a few gil and silly achievements. Maybe that just happens to be all he caught while he was testing it out.
Fishing still has an impact on the economy.
You can use xivdb.com to see what other recipies besides shark oil fished items contribute to. Most of them are for culinarian, but there are others floating around. I will agree that there aren't enough, but they are still there and people will eventually need those fished items to craft them. Theres also fish oil and fish glue within alchemist recipes.

One synthesis is hardly enough to state that Fisher is that important. It will never contend with Miner or even Botanist for income. Most of the Shark Oil I used in Phase 4 was for Militia off-hand tools. What good is it after that?
I still say rare and elusive fish should be in most of lvl70 culinarian recipes. There are a lot of useless fish that could be used in these things, but they make no real use of them yet.

Yea, I just don't see why FSH "can't" have a big impact. When Yoshi-p originally said fisher would
not have an impact my heart sank. But now I'm seeing some recipes and I'm happy again, because
I actually made money on fisher! I was rewarded for putting effort into something I enjoyed lol.
So why not let us use fished up items for higher level crafts players want? D:
My memories from the pre-Dalamud days are as hazy as the npc are probably but if I recall correctly the fishing bots had an enormous impact on the economy since a lot of their fish were sold on the market and ground to crystals which were high in demand for crafting. They were also turned over to the Grand Companies for seals towards fairly good equipment as well as other items and achievements so the demand for fish was pretty sky high and the bots really made a pretty penny. Fish trade in had a cap which was filled almost within 1 minute of the start of each turn-in cycle. It was also certainly a more attractive option than grinding primals and crossing your fingers for weapons to trade in.
According to the census from XIVpads not many people actually finished leveling their fishing so you have whole servers wanting fish with not many people available to provide them.

Someone from the beta forums said that the new fishing system will be harder for bots to manage because it is more visual/audio-cued than log based (ex: the log doesn't tell you when to pull up). If this is the case then I can see how the impact on the economy would be a lot less severe since it was really about the fish wasn't it? Fish made everything go around; it was responsible for a large amount of the moving gil since we didn't have much to do!
tl;dr- Fish was very important in 1.0 and always in high demand. Fishing was tedious and boring after awhile so few people had it leveled making it a very ripe market for profits by bots who had the patience to fish in place for days on end. So I'm thinking what Yoshi-P meant was that the impact on the economy won't be as severe.

Kill the bots, not the class.
