Nothing is stopping SE from adding both styles. few quests that supply the fun factor as well the SP option, or items. we are not limited to one style or direction.
SE is known for their story telling, lets put it to the test. this is a huge world they created, bet SE has many tales they can tell us about it. I for one will be looking forward to them at least.
don't like this idea, i for one do the quests for the story only, rewards don't need to be part of it, what they should do is make them caped fights in them, add bosses in lots of them and make them as fun to fight as a tiamat or behemoth. this is easily done with caps on quests. maybe some sp sounds good but not enough where we are just doing them for sp, not like u get to repeat them. u do them once or they would be leves? actually i'm kinda sold on the sp lol, it would give the lazy people who need something from them to do them with those who want to read the stories. but yeah reward or no reward, i'm all about the story in them and the mini boss/nm fights in them.

I agree with many of the suggestions here for the rewards of side quests, but i think SP/EXP should not be the main point in doing these quests. However you should get it just as you get SP/EXP by fighting any mob.
I also believe there should be more than just the gear we receive, like if we do the X, Y and Z quest we unlock other quests with more powerfull content and some unique items. Or a fame system that unlocks other things similar to XI, so that is a point on doing a quest that gives you a brass choker
I personally feel that at the very least the mobs should give exp/sp. I don't like the idea of getting exp for an end reward. It's too much like 90% of other games out there.
I also like the idea of making them challenging with other quests being unlocked and progressing the story line/lore.
