Was listening to the old lorecast (episode 2) and a couple questions occurred to me.

1) Is the Age of Endless Frost the same as the 5th Umbral Era? None of the web sources for lore explicitly link the two but it seems like they're the same thing.

2) If Eorzea is based on Greece, what city-states do each of the nations correspond to? I'd imagine Ala Mhigo = Macedonia (first to fall to Persia). Ul'dah is Corinth (trade center), with a dash of Phoenicia (another merchant nation from an older era, which was ethnically a little, ahem, darker). Limsa Lominsa is Athens, the strongest naval power in the Hellenic league. Surprisingly, I would map Gridania onto Sparta, with its staunch isolationism and religious fanaticism.

Actually, if we're talking isolationism and religious fanaticism, I would think Ishgard...They fit the bill as Sparta better.

Age of Endless Frost and the 5th Umbral are indeed the same, different cultures/societies would have called it different things especially if because it's so cold that they don't or couldn't travel much and meet other people to discuss stories.

The difference is that Gridania/Sparta actually participated in defending against the Garlean/Persian invasions whereas Ishgard (im)politely declined and said Not My Problem. I recall at least one city state which declined to join the Hellenic League but my Greek history is spotty at this point and it's notoriously difficult to google city states which did NOT participate in the Persian wars.

I'm not sure there's enough to go on to say they followed the template that closely. We know the main Greek concept is that there are several independently governed city-states with a history of war and alliance with one another that unite to face an empire moving against them. But, I mean, whereas the Greek connection implies the Persian Empire, the Garleans are clearly based on Rome, so it's hard to assume that any of the Greek city-states have direct Eorzean analogues. There are dozens, if not hundreds, of little connections here and there to Greek history and mythology, though, so who knows!

I think Corinth would fit "staunch isolationism and religious fanaticism" better. At lease Gridiania is willing to help fight the Empire. Something I cannot say for the holy see who I think would care less about the war unless one side is trying to wipe them or their religion out (I think they might be tempered) and would probably see both sides as heretics.

Also If anything fits Sparta better, it might actually be the Proud Warrior Race of the Almal'ja (If you count the tempered than then have the fundamentalism down pat as well)

Updated with a couple of the Syrcus Tower / Xande in relationship to the Fourth Umbral era.

I'm really hoping Ishgard is going to bring in some good Lore (expect it to). I just hope Nidhogg doesn't disappear just because Shiva is clearly coming, the Dragoon questline with Nidhogg and Estinien should also play some part.

Didn't the city states declare a new era had begun after the defeate of ultima weapon?

And I think you used Sixth era instead of Fifth Umbral

They did but I'm not currently adding to the Seventh Astral era as everything is happening in the now (atleast until we get definite years). Sixth era instead of Fifth Umbral?

I think the "An Eorzean Timeline" section at the start needs updating re the astral/umbral order which you've updated in the main content.
