    Idea: Limit Break System

Yoshi-P frequently mentions that he is trying to make FFXIV a more "Final Fantasy-esque" game. On top of that, 2 hour abilities were a really cool feature in FFXI that made jobs much more individualized and fun. So, why not introduce something similar in FFXIV, but rather than 2 hour abilities, call them Limit Breaks, like in Final Fantasies of the past? Limit Breaks are an iconic part of many FF games that I feel would fit perfectly in this game, and you would be killing two birds with one stone: making classes more unique AND making the game more Final Fantasy-esque.

Here's one example of how it would work: each class (of course, including crafting and gathering classes) gets its own unique Limit Break. Possibly, you could learn additional Limit Breaks as your rank increased or certain other conditions were met. Then, in addition to your HP, MP, and TP gauges, you would have a Limit gauge that slowly filled up as you defeated monsters, caused damage, crafted items, etc. When the gauge fills up, you are able to use a powerful skill that can turn the tides of battle...or crafting, I guess.

I agree with you. Special attack that you could do only after meeting certain requirement(limit break, desperation attack, trance, overdrive, two hours, quickening) would help to increase the FF-like feeling of the game.

I dunno if I'd say Limit Break's are iconic of the series.. FFVII is the only game that comes to mind that used it. Well, I guess FFIX's "Trance" system was pretty similar too.. But yeah, I'm not sure iconic is the right word there.

Every mainstream Final Fantasy game starting with VII has had some sort of Limit Break feature. VII = Limit Breaks, VIII = Limit Breaks, IX = Trance, X = Overdrive, XI = 2hr, XII = Quickening, XIII = Eidolons (yeah they were more like limit breaks than summons). Even VI sort of had them.

Oh that's right, VIII did have them. I should have remembered that.
I wouldn't call Eidolons or Two Hours or even Quickening perhaps limit breaks though.

Actually, Many final fantasy have their own version of 'limit break', though not ALl of it have it.

FFVI was kind of not obvious, you would only notice it if your characters were in critical health, then they would make really strong attacks instead of regular attacks. their attacks would also have names. It's something you would notice if you pay attention.

    FFVII: Obviously.

FFVIII: Definitely has it. And I like this FFVIII system too. Basically you get the limit break based on your health, and the lower it is, the more likely you'll be able ot use the limit break. Also, there is a buff called aura that allows you to do so.

FFIX: Trance system. It is based on how much damage you received and deal, it's kind of like TP, but I haven't played FFIX ina LONG time so I can't really say.

FFX: Overdrive system, similar to TRance, kind of.

FFXI: 2hr abilities would be the best way to compare.

FFXII and FFXIII don't SEEM to have something like this.

That said, I feel that FFXIv should definitely have something like this.

I really like this idea. I hope the charge rate is such that you can use it in the course of a regular day. in FFXI the 2hour abiltiies were awesome, but the cooldown was prohibitively high. A one hour or even 30 minute cooldown probably wouldn't have changed the balance all that much, but would have allowed people to actually use their abilities more as opposed to always keeping it in reserve for when things got worse.

Well, that was kind of the point. They were extremely powerful abilities (well, most of them at least), and they wanted you to use them wisely. I think two hours is really a perfect time-frame for such immensely powerful skills.

I'd like to see some sort of limit break for each class. Something that screams Final Fantasy, too. Put those special effects skills to work, SE!

    But that was the point.
Don't use it because you never know when you'll need it.
Monks 2hr on a 30 minute timer would have been too much.
