ffxiv combat system is faster just not as well set up
i'm not gonna be happy to admit this but...
as a person who played ffxi for 6 years playing 12+ hours a day. ffxi combat was slow, it was kinda dull and a bit mind numbing. And my highest jobs were monk @ 80 dancer at 90. We had alot we can do but we also got limited in what we could do. same for rdm. I liked to melee cuz I hated just standing around. I got ADD so i like being active. I was happy when SE said ffxiv was going ti have a manuel attack I was hoping for something like zelda. I even made suggestions that it is possible to have a more dynamic manual attack. DCUO has one so does zelda.
I persinally don;t like Auto attack not because it fast or slow is I am not making my character attack I'm not keeping my mind active.
Slow is good, and here is why:
1. Haste is more noticeable and means more when you actually see yourself hitting faster.
2. Gives you room for timing and mid-combat strategy changes.
3. You can converse during battle (although with the one chat window in FFXI, this was almost irrelevant)
4. Managing casting time and recast timers become a greater focus for efficiency, rather than spamming whatever is currently available.

I like the speed of attack in FFXIV just fine. The problem is with classes and how generic skills and magic skills are. All the skills/spells are pretty dull and don't mean much in terms of winning most battles as far as I can tell.
They might consider making normal attacks weaker and certain skills/spells stronger or more useful. Auto attack may help this but who knows. In FFXI, if all your party did was use auto attack in a exp pt on most IT mobs, it would take forever to kill them. If your party used team work and were skilled, you could chain mobs very fast. We could use more of that in FFXIV imo.
We also need a better party search system. It is not easy to get random people for parties without a better search system. Plus battle regiments need a lot of work or get overhauled completely. Skill chains and magic burst really improved involvement in party play in FFXI. We need something like that for FFXIV.
br are improved skill chains. anything can link and chain up as long as it fits the combo. ffxi sw and mb was ultra picky. you had to have 2 spesific ws and not sw fit all chains. this made pt harder to get if they wanted a certain sc.

Hmm maybe but from what I can tell, BRs seem ineffective, like they take more time to do then are worth. I could be wrong on that, maybe I just haven't messed around with it enough to get a BR that works well against certain mobs.

Well the issue is mobs die to fast to make them effective to use, though once you start fighting NMs and fights can last for 30 (15?) minutes ( and then enrage and one shot everyone) then you really start to notice how effective BRs are and you get good at them to where they take no time at all. Though I do wish they didn't lock you in and you could still normal attack during the queuing.

Oh ok thanks for the info. I haven't fought NMs yet so glad to hear they are useful for something at least.
Dear god a 5member pug-alley party has kept me on the edge of my pants while I swap from my blm spells to heals. Almost every time survival is decided by split second decisions and ability to smoothly chain a spell combination in the right order.
XIV? a spamfest.
I will agree with you there. As a mage in XI, the battle speed could be fast to the point of driving you insane. Here...notsomuch. But the melee speed is so much faster (and, IMHO, better) in this game.
