    New Player Tips

I'm surprised there isn't a general tip thread for us newbies. I know even in the small amount of time I tested I learned a few nice things that helped me level.

Getting archer to level 6 takes about ~15 minutes, and gives you 3 cross class abilities that give 10% spammable crit buff, 20% damage boost (2min cd), and a 100 upfront, 35 potency dot attack. These can be used by any disciple of war class.

Getting Conjurer to 2 will also let any class use cure, and getting it to 8 will let any class use protect, useful for soloing.

What are some tips some of you veterans have for us lowbies trying to get a leg up?

Sky: I thought it took that long, but I honestly couldn't remember was very low on sleep when I leveled it, just knew it was ridiculously short. changed it.

getting an archer to level 6 takes about 15min, if that.
go out to south shroud, kill everything in your hunting log and quest log, take time to grind on mobs your level or slightly higher, goto north shroud, kill more stuff in your hunting log, bam done.

I would like to add. Grouping is your friend in this game. Experience is not divided so whether you are soloing or in a party of 8 you will get the same exp per kill. However with 8 people you will be killing things way faster and the bonus exp will go higher faster and just go higher (I seen mine go up to 200%). So be friendly and make friends ^^

MATERIA!!! Keep all of your gear while leveling up (you won't need the space). But also try to wear the gear until your "Spiritbond" reaches 100%. Then replace gear for your new better stuff you've been itching to equip. And rinse and repeat until around level 20. Then you can go to the BONFIRE in Central Thanalan (@ 23,13) and learn how to turn that useless old gear in to MATERIA! And it's a good idea to keep your starting gear for making a new class...just so you're not in your plain clothes and have some armor.

Now to equip said MATERIA! This depends on what Disciple of the Hand you are (excluding Culinarians). All the different Disciple of the Hand classes can (if of the same or higher level than the item) attach MATERIA to items that they can make. Armorsmiths can attach MATERIA to metal armor and so on.

But wait, there's more! You need a catalyst in order to attach MATERIA. These can only be obtained by the Disciple of the Land classes. And as you guessed it, depending on what type of item it is depends on what type of catalyst you need. And the different Disciple of the Land classes garner different catalysts suited for the varied item types.

Or you can simply ask someone to affix Materia for you. But be warned, the first MATERIA is free, the next on the same item may result in complete destruction!

    Good luck!

Materia rules changed a bit. As long as it has an open slot, it is a 100% success rate to meld materia. If the materia is being added, and there are no open slots, there's a chance it will fail. If it fails, you lose the materia and the catalyst, but not the item(in 1.0 you lost everything and there was no guarantee).

That's not true, anymore at least, all materia needs is Grade X Carbonized Matter, where X is the level of the material.
