This is what I use and I tell you is much much better then the game pad config. you can control up to 12 actions while holding LT and 12 more while holding RT less witching aroundIf you are in a PC it shouldn't be very hard. You could use a software that changes your buttons into keyboard actions like Xpadder. So you still have the movement and then you assign to the other buttons the keys you want to trigger your actions, just remember to have the hotbar clean of actions so it doesn't execute the keystroke and the action of the hotbar =)
I personally love how the game-pad works and, even the number of actions is more limited than in a keyboard, I think it's faster and way more comfortable.
@ShadowVulcan: More useful than going back is to hold one (don't remember which one and then press the cross or buttons to jump directly to the hotcross you want)
The current way it is confuses the hell out of me as I have aspergers syndrome (played FFXI for years, too drastic a change for me). Although I'm not asking them to tailor to my needs, it would be great for a straight version considering they've already done it.
Always think through your responses and appreciate other peoples opinions for what they are (opinions).
It is insanely slow to play with the crossbar setup, and I'm not really able to access other hotbars quickly enough. It's a convoluted set up and should be reversed to the
V 1.0, which was user-friendly, fast, and effective. The current hotbar for gamepad/controller users is ineffective and makes gamepad/controller players look inept to keyboard players. Remember that not everyone is playing on a PC, and regardless if they are playing on a PC, they shouldn't have to work between the controller and the keyboard or be forced to use the keyboard. Many players do not enjoy playing FFXIV on the keyboard.
We do like playing FFXIV with gamepads/controllers, so SE please reset your configuration on the hotbars, so that gamepad/controller players are effective players in V 2.0.
I think people are over looking the fact that what you select a button on the hotbar it performs the action on the currently selected target, meaning a target should be selected before you activate an action. Where as in FFXI and 1.0 when an action was performed, it would ask the player to select a target. Once the target was selected it would then perform the action. In 1.0 they did add an option to perform the action on the currently selected target if already targeted. But this behavior could be inconsistent.

Would it be possible to get some substantive comment on the possibility of restoring 1.0 controller mode as an optional control method, alongside the keyboard and 2.0 controller mode?
I went from testing the beta using a pc to PS3 for launch, and had enough of a lag between the two to become with the cross bar fairly quickly. Yet, I find it cumbersome and ill equipped for targeting while in instances. This will become crucial as the game progresses, and so I plan on switching to a keyboard and mouse setup. I would love to see the traditional PC hot bar put in place for those of us on PS3 with mice and keyboards.
I tried the cross hot bar for about 6 hours when the game launched officially. Tinkered with it in the Beta's, but never really liked it. Compared to 1.0 hotbar system (Which worked kind of like the FFXI Macro System), the cross hot bar is garbage. Went back to mouse and keyboard. One can move the cursor fast enough to wherever they need it with a controller just as fast they can move move a mouse. How hard is it to make a legacy controller config? You made a Legacy Mouse config, which I thank you guys for.
Holy kinda-necro-bump batman... Had to take a hiatus until I built a new pc (finally done). Jumped back into FFXIV and this thing pisses me off just as much as it did when I quit. Is there a way to use 1.0 style (XI style) hotbars yet? Have they addressed the issue? I played thru every phase of beta and 1.0, stayed loyal, paid for a year up front when it was available... Why can't I use the setup they made me learn this game on? Xbar is total garbage. To each their own, I just cannot get used to it. It's effecting my gameplay to an extent that it isn't fun, and I'm constantly hitting the wrong things after months of using it. Wtf..
Nope.
But as mentioned above, I've been playing with GlovePie since release now and am quite happilly gamepadding away on my PC.
I find it a LOT easier to just use the gamepad buttons as keyboard presses (with/without modifier keys) to trigger bound actions directly, instead of using that silly crossbar setup.
The setup is a matter of personal taste, but personally currently my Gamepad has a d-pad, 12 buttons and two analogue axis (PS2 style).
My Glovepie Script uses one of those buttons for a "Trigger" key (Ctrl), one for "Jump", and the other ten to give direct access to Hotbar commands (two full rows across HotBars #1 and #2 due to the trigger key).
One Analogue Axis does character movement, one does camera positioning/targetting (depending on the trigger key state), whilst the D-Pad does target marking (meaning I can mark targets whilst running or using other abilities).
I supplement the above with my keyboard's numpad (covers party member direct targetting and full access to the 24 commands across hotbars #3 and #4 via the joypad's trigger key) and a 5-button mouse (covers fine camera adjustment and a few commands on Hotbar5 such as mouseover Healing macros or "Provoke")
The above setup is a little involved, but basically it lets me target enemies/teammates and activate a little over 50 hotbar commands with my right hand (usually involving only one button press) whilst having my left hand permanently resting on the [movement/jump/enemy marking] controls. It considerably reduces my dodging reaction time and means I very rarely need to spend time looking for/clicking on things.
