that would go too much into scholar territory (who have a support fairy and a healer fairy)
those are the scholar pets, not summoner pets

Now I haven't played ACN in this game yet, but you all make me want to play it. In FFXI I was always obsessed with pet jobs, I loved them because it was like having your own partner when ever you didn't have your friends to play with. Hearing that they've improved on the the SMN job and made it better is getting my really excited to see it for myself. I'm glad to see that they have made FFXIV in't a great game.
How important is pet positioning to playing ARC/SMN?
I was immediately interested in the class, but I am concerned about my ability to micromanage the pet.
As stylish as the summoners are, I might be better off just nuking things with BM if I have a hard time multitasking.
Thank you so much for this post. It clears up a lot of confusion for me. Is there a SE generated resource that describes this in more detail? If I am in the SMN or SCH job, do I still gain EXP for the ACN class? No, I think you misread whatever said that. What happens is that BOTH SMN and SCH's lvls are dependent on your ACN lvl. So if you lvl ACN to 45 with SMN unlocked, SMN will be 45 when you equip the soul. If you swap to the SCH soul, the SCH will be lv45. Jobs do not have exp bars of their own, only the main class their tied too. (so SMN doesn't gain extra lvls from THM and SCH doesn't gain lvls from CNJ, only ACN for both)
Edit: To unlock SMN, you need THM at lv15. To unlock SCH, you need CNJ at 15. In addition, ACN must be 30+ and for each job, you have to do a quest to gain the Job Soul. After that, you can freely change jobs/classes between SMN/SCH/ACN by equipping/unequipping souls while on ACN.

Is there any benefit to not using the jobs? In other words, are there situations where and arcanist is better than a summoner or a scholar? Are there reasons why I would NOT choose a job?

Jobs are more like a proficiency class, so u can say that classes are pretty general and can be used while solo, so u have more skills to add, Jobs are meant to fill a specific Role, so you'll want to change to them on group play.
generally when pets do not have agro with a mob, they fight from the back. its a pretty standard setup since most mobs perform frontal attacks that would damage it. i don't remember seeing this mechanic though, so if there isnt one, it should be incorporated. a pet class needs to be able to keep its pet alive through the fight. dying to massive AOE is a problem that at least in WoW has been addressed since pet classes loose almost near half if not more of their effectiveness when their pets die, and reviving them is a significant reduction in dps.How important is pet positioning to playing ARC/SMN?

Well thanks for the replies. I'll likely go SMN after I get WAR geared up. I think it will be really exciting if it can tank/off-tank at the level 50 content plus I tend to like pet classes when I can't play a Nin/Sam type class.
P.S. Alexander eggi would be amazing... SMN w/ Alexander + DRG = dead Bahamut ^_^
I can't wait for Summoner. I played it on FFXI as well. So far I like Arcanist too. Too bad I got stuck at lvl 12 by that Error 90000 bug.
