What companion role for archer / bard?

I am not sure what companion role to pick for my chocobo? Everything is so easy in PVE so far that I feel like I should make it DPS just to kill even faster.. will I regret this later on?

Any advice would be helpful.

I was going to make it a tank, but i just kill things too fast for it to really matter >.> the nice thing about making it a dps though is when/if you ever plan on leveling Conj it would probably help out a lot.

Well I am certainly going to need to level up lancer to at least 32, what would work well with a lancer?

My chocobo is only rank 4, but as a full tank it can't hold agro from my BLM. I'm sure it'd be the same case for a BRD.

You only really use it soloing when you don't have to run around much, so might as well go dps.

I think the best advice right now is "it doesn't really matter".

In the early ranks, the skills in each tree differ incredibly slightly from each other and all of them are fairly weak. For example, the early "tank" skills do just as much damage as the DPS skills, but the added emnity simply isn't enough for him to hold a mob's attention if you're doing damage. The early heal only heals for like 4 hp per tick. They're incredibly weak...

So in my opinion, spending time trying to figure out which is "best" rather than just picking one and leveling is only worthwhile right now if you truly believe that they won't implement a way to respec them later (which I think is definitely going to happen). They've been talking about adding Chocobo raising into the game, and it's very possible they'll just let you have more than one companion where you can spec each one differently.
