I've read on this forum in a couple places how equipping Spell Speed doesn't really help BLM, because it quickens the casting only, with no effect on the GCD. These statements usually also make mention of Skill Speed affecting GCD for melee jobs. So what about equipping Skill Speed as a BLM? Would it lower GCD? And if so, is there enough to be had to be worthwhile?

Ignore it, they are both pure garbage. I have said it many time but once more for ya;

Wep DMG > INT > Acc 437 give or take > Crit > Vit > Det > whatever.

Spell speed does affect global cooldown, if you don't believe me check your recast after taking off a piece of spell speed.

Currently I have 465 spell speed from my gear, which only equates to about a 4.8% casting time reduction. So as you can see most other stats are better to aim for if possible.

Hi guys, so I'm a noob with only a low level BLM. I was wondering why no one mentions Scathe, I love using this since it almost has no cast time. In the time it takes to cast one elemental spell I would have casted 2 or 3 Scathes. With high CRIT, wouldn't this be more optimal damage? Just curious. Also, if I main Scathe which would be better, spell speed or high crit? Thanks for answering!

Scathe triggers the GCD of 2.5 seconds, so it's essentially the same as casting your stronger spell, except you do a fraction of the damage in exchange for being able to move. Never scathe when you can stand still and cast.

Wait, so I can get to cast and move as well during boss fights AND do about the same damage with unaspected neutral damage? I don't see what the point is to 'Never scathe when you can stand still and cast'. Or am I missing something here entirely?

If you need to move constantly in a boss fight your positioning is bad. Part of being a good caster is understanding the spots you can use to minimize movement. In most cases even, you'll only need to move for a second or two before you go back to casting.

Hi, i need help deciding on which class to play.
I know both are perfectly viable, and it's about "what i want to play", i'm not looking for which one is OP or FOTM, just undecided and got one to 20 and another one to 16, so, what would YOU play and why?

I play black mage because I like mages. I have played mages in all major MMO's and they are my preferred class to play. I like black mage over summoner because it is an instant satisfaction job, meaning I can see my dps and big numbers right away. I also don't like being dependent on a pet. From the numbers I have seen the summoner's pet is roughly 20-25% of their total damage. They die sometimes and then you are gimped. However, that being said, any fight with movement summoner has an advantage because in theory the only thing that stops their dps in human error or a phase shift with the mob being immune. BLM=big numbers BOOM, Summoner small numbers that add up
