Effeminate in JP games>>>>>>all, you should know this by now.Considering we're talking about Ifrit at times, and posting DPS parsers of high level dungeons at others, should I just call you a poo poo head and be done with the random implied insults? Also how much HP does the Dummy Have? Defenses? Level? What buffs do you have?
Seriously. Think about what you're trying to figure out. The class that does the most damage. That's like trying to figure out which sport is the best ever. Good luck with that.
My unfailing, erect, and ready to perform, black hat will always be better then your weak, effeminate archer's bonnet.
Target dummies have infinite health, that's kind of the point. They also have minimal to no defenses and are level 50, which again, is kind of the point. If you're going to figure out the best DPS class you do it under optimal conditions. It's cool if you don't get it, but don't try to derail shit. I'm also not an archer, so I'm not sure I get what you're trying to say at the end there.
I was trying to steer the conversation to a more "fun" direction with "friendly ribbing". My mistake. I will stay out of here and let the pros talk it out and decide on a consensus of which class to nerf next. Carry on weary soldiers. /saluteTarget dummies have infinite health, that's kind of the point. They also have minimal to no defenses and are level 50, which again, is kind of the point. It's always like this in every game. Fun to some people is usually the most damage in this game but honestly, damage between each dps class is close enough that it doesn't really matter in the end but people like to blow it out of proportion at times but that's ok, at least there's discussion rather than utter boring silence.
a dummy is useful for testing rotation... there is no fight where you can tunnel like that, so what you can do on a dummy does not matter in a raid.Target dummies have infinite health, that's kind of the point. I never even claimed anything of the sort. If you want to test what class can straight up do the most DPS, you do it under OPTIMAL CONDITIONS for all classes. A target dummy provides those conditions. What raid bosses do is irrelevant when the question is "What class does the most DPS?". The only other valid target to answer the question is a boss like Patchwerk. A fight with no movement, minimal armor and resistances, a long enough duration, and equal opportunity.
If it was "what class does the most DPS in a raid environment" then you would have a point. But it isn't and never was. Considering you think yourself hardcore I had assumed you, of all people, would have known this. Obviously I should have known that self-appointed titles rarely hold up. Though who am I to call someone on that? I haven't raided seriously in many years. Either way boss mechanics are irrelevant.
I think that is what most people in this thread aren't getting. None of this discussion is relevant to the OP's original question, but the question has been posed and discussed for the majority of this thread. It is not answered by a fight like Garuda or Ifrit. It is answered by target dummies and absolute tank and spank fights. This is how it has ALWAYS been answered.
I will, however, give you that the question is fairly vague. But even then an equal comparison would have to be done on a dummy, because fights like Garuda are punishing to melee much more than they are to a Bard. Especially a monk. There cannot be an equal comparison when using the majority of dungeon/raid bosses and that is why target dummies are so useful for questions like these. I can come off like a dick, I know, but I am just trying to clear things up for everyone because the discussion has gotten muddied.

This and all of this.
Here's the difference between ranged dps:Archer/Bard has got to be the strongest sustained DPS in the game because everything can be cast on the move. Positioning hardly matters to them, whereas all the melee classes have to run in and out of red circles all fight and casters have to stand still, risking damage from wayward red circles. Archers/Bard can run around freely mashing on their skills every time its up with little regard to the monster. As long as they are not standing in the red circles, they are constantly applying damage.
Bard = highest single target dps
BLM = highest AOE dps
SMN = most versatile dps
Nailed it!

BRD's ability to stay mobile and not worry about positional requirements(flank/behind) or cast times makes them look like the highest DPS. Others may surpass it depending on specific fights because of mechanics though.
