There are people from (for instance) Europe who've purchased the American version of Final Fantasy XI when it was released in America. The reason was, that they had to wait for at least a year, before the game was officially released in Europe. The problem back then was, that the American version only accepted an American address.
In order to by-pass that, was to enter a random non-existent address. When you reached the billing section, then you were able to select any country, including the country you were living in. Once that was set up, you were good to go.
But, if you didn't write down the address, or when SE would validate the address after you've called their support desk, you were in deep doo-doo.
It was not an uncommon scenario.

When you have important first-time information like that and can't remember it, it's always important to back it up numerous ways. That's rule number 1. Your friend should have been more careful with all his information.
