Loved the game, hated that cover art.
It's like the people in VG PR/Localization studios in the US market seem to think 3D character model = more sales, drawn art = allergic reaction.

Even though Sakaguchi is the creator the person responsible for the "masterpieces" still thankfully works for SE even if you dont like his current work.
Yoshinori Kitase is responsible for FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, FFIX, FFX, and FFXIII.
These are by far the most popular/liked in the series. Sure some people prefer FFIV, but most 90% if not more will say VI, VII or another of the before mentioned.
Sakaguchi even wrote the story for VII, and they ended up not using his exact story and went with Kitase's version. There are numerous twists that would have been less interesting without Kitase. I think Sephiroth was initially Aerith's boyfriend at some point?
Anyway, I think the change in the series is not the loss of Sakaguchi, or even the merger, but the focus change.
The focus to "graphics" and not so much the "polish" which is what the franchise is famous for, it does have good graphics, but that is not why its so well known. Its polish is what defines Final Fantasy. Tweaking things until they are just right, story, music, graphics and often times the mechanics, is what have been most memorable.
Now that over half of the core members of Square is gone, I dont see as much polish. I dont feel good about ARR, nor do i feel good about XV.. mostly because Kitase is not a part of those. I have a little hope for XV because of Nomura, but he was originally just a character designer.
It pains me to say these things because they dont seem most bright sided, but to be honest after being in the beta for about 9 months or so, I feel a bit uneasy with FF in general (hearing the things Yoshi-P keeps saying like "we dont like the old FF logo" and other mentions to the numbers getting ridiculous.)
'
on a more positive note, the step SE made with ARR (listening to the consumer, and becoming more "Final Fantasy" oriented) is a step in the right direction.

I still wonder, what is Hiroyuki Ito doing? He did FFVI, IX and XII, the best critically acclaimed FFs...
And on the thread topic, more than Sakaguchi, I'd like to know that Tanaka thinks about ARR and the course Yoshi has taken FFXIV.
As I mentioned a while back, I wanted to see Tanaka sign up with Mistwalker, join forced with Sakaguchi and make The Last Story 2. If Sakaguchi is rumored to not want FF to be rehashed, he's probably not much into serialization as a whole.
* The sad thing is that FFXIV turned RDM into a turret, and people think that's what it's supposed to be. It's supposed to combine sword and magic into something more, not spend the bulk of gameplay spamming spells and jump into melee for only 3 GCDs before scurrying back to the back line like good little casters.
* Design ideas:
Red Mage - COMPLETE (https://tinyurl.com/y6tsbnjh), Chemist - Second Pass (https://tinyurl.com/ssuog88), Thief - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/vdjpkoa), Rune Fencer - First Pass (https://tinyurl.com/y3fomdp2)
They could call it "Ultimate Adventure" or "Eschaton Journey"...
The last thing I remember Sakaguchi saying about Final Fantasy was that the FFXII Director could return the series to greatness.
Considering that Sakaguchi his wasting his (and our) time making surf cellphone minigames, I seriously doubt his opinion is anywhere relevant.
Lost Odyssey was a good game, but could never finish it. The game play didn't feel much like the older RPG genre. Not only that, but they also used the Unreal Engine, which I have never been big on in the first place.
One thing that bugged me was the commercial.
WHY WOULD THEY PLAY WHITE RABBIT IN THAT!?

I don't know how.... it really relates to the entire plot. It's like using My Hands in XIII.
Just no.
C'est Vie ou Mort!
