Well.. don't worry "gigabit ethernet" is on its way.

I could be totally wrong but in the end you cannot truly eliminate lag due to physics. We use a light based fibre optic communications network therefore the fastest information can travel from point A to point B is effectively the speed of light less infrastructural friction.

This makes me long for the day this planet will have lag-free communications across the entire surface

Well at least until we are able to use Quantam Entanglement to provide FTL communications.
