Whether or not RMT will abuse fishing has nothing to do with the contradiction of Yoshida's and Hvinire's statements though. Yoshida said that fishing will have no effect on the economy, which means that either there is no demand or next to unlimited supply. No demand would mean no (useful) recipes, which doesn't appear to be the case. Unlimited supply would mean that either all fish can be bought cheaply at NPCs or that it requires little to no effort to catch any fish you want whenever you want.

This was basically already the case with Botany in the last beta phase. If you know where you can find a specific item, it's Just a matter of getting there and specifically farm For that particular item.

For example, I needed paprika's for a Miq'abob. So I set out to (I believe) west la Noscea and farm for paprika's at 4 spots. Got a full stack of 99 paprika's easy.

And to be honest... I loved it. (^_^ )

    The difference is that
    a) it still requires a lot of time and effort. You can't just go afk while you character keeps chopping, right? Of course we still don't know if that's going to be possible with fishing either, but it's a possibility.
    b) Paprikas may be easy enough to get, but I'm sure there are rare items, high quality items, and simply higher level items that not every player has easy access to. Again, these things may or may not apply to fishing. But if they do apply, then Yoshida's statement about a fisherman's part in Eorzea's economy is obviously false. Unless, as mentioned before, all fish can be bought from NPCs for a small price.

So, where does that leave the rest of us who want to take up fishing as a profession/class and not some hobby for "in-between-battles" or sport?

I'm glad we were able to reel-in a catch! "Hook-line-and-sinker"! XD

In the same boat as people who want to fight primal battles with parley?

Seriously, though, Sir Hiv has confirmed we'll actually fish up craftable/sellable inventory, not just a tick on a list and an achievement. Now it's up to me to find the profit, even if it's only like my other DoL in ARR so far, mostly just to provide massive amounts of mats (and gil savings) for skilling up.

Oh, also, now I can even say that this is better than the fishing system that FFXI launched with, IMHO. And we know updates are coming, like treasure map stuff, and we can continue to post feedback requesting more.

I'm just playing the skeptic card here. Fishing will begin low-profile. Whether it be a class or cross-classes. I enjoyed fishing in 1.0 and would like it to be a solid class.

I'm pretty sure also that updates will pile on, i'm not really complaining but I'm sure there's a 000secret000 pond or000 beach000 to go fishing at. (if your a hard-care DoL_fisher) ;D

While fishing, your catches will go into your inventory, and you are able to both sell it back to the market, use it as an ingredient in your food recipes, or use it immediately for bait to lure in different fish. You can also fish up coral to be used in various accessories and even more surprising items.
I don't understand. Do we actually do anything while fishing? Or just sit there and let the fish jump into our buckets?

You pick your bait, you cast.. you wait for a bite. If/When the bite comes, you try to hook the fish and if successful, you reel it in.

"try to hook the fish and if successful" is a bit misleading. From the video it looks like the fish either bites or doesn't, and when it does you just press another button to reel it in. There's no fight anymore.
