Regardless, I still think it'd be awesome to be able to challenge the Villains and Hero Parties of past games in a Coliseum-type setting with a group of 4, 8 or even 24.

Honestly, after the very start of that video, I'm going to be disappointed if I can't play every single Final Fantasy title through FFXIV: ARR. Seems like a great idea for the Gold Saucer. Or even through the mothercrystal, which links all of the games together. That's the best way to get XIII characters in the game.
Also, this thread should be about how Thaumaturge's "Thunder" should actually be called "Lightning" because, y'know, it's LIGHTNING.
According to the blog post it's an in-game costume for Lightning Returns.

Apparently most of you didnt watch the actual letter..one of the guys working on lighting returns showed a picture of lightning as a miquote. Yoshi laughed and said if you put that in game we have to put something from 13 in our game and threw out some ridiculous ideas like jumping dimensions into xiv. The entire time they were all laughing and joking about it not taking the actual thing seriously. The live letter itself as a joke they just invited whoever wanted to come in to the booth in and talked about e3 and joked around. There was no game footage and they answered questions that had already been answered prior.
If you ask me, the whole thing was more so a spectacle for the people actually at E3 than it was an actual producer letter for the fans like usual. Besides, they're at E3 and speaking only in japanese, I don't think they really expected anyone to care about it much.
I'm sure they'll take the english version more seriously.
I could see either Tidus or Squall because they suffered from time distorsions in their story, but it would sadly make the whole ff universe one big universe where all the stories can tie up on a timeline. I'm aware of such theory, but I prefer the alternate realities, different worlds one.
So if this was no joke and something serious, seeing lightning in ffxiv, would kidda be a downer for me. Espicially because ffxiii didn't get me at the point that it's the worst i've experienced.

What I took from everything released so far is to expect some sort of shout-out to previous FF titles. We have the warrior of light helm, the obvious buster sword reference as well as golden saucer(ff7 duh),the ff6 tribute of Terra controlling magitech armor, and then them joking about Lightning. I myself am expecting plenty of either references to past FF titles or vanity items commemorating them but my only basis for saying such a thing is the fact in the last FFXIV trailer they started it off by showing clips of FF1-FF13. Maybe it's wishful thinking but I myself will be looking for those references in ARR once it's released. How about everyone else?
I'd prefer not to see another FF character personified in the game. Things like statues that was mentioned earlier in the thread or other things like that would be ok, but I don't want to see them as an actual NPC. I don't feel it fits.
I'm already turned off by seeing a Dragoon wielding a Buster Sword doing Omnislash. I realize this is a bit of a fanservice title but the line has to be drawn somewhere.
