Do you need a special 3D monitor? Or does any regular monitor work?

It depends on what is your GPU manufacture, with nvidia you need a 120~hz monitor and their NVIDIA 3D Vision Kit(not just the glasses).
AMD has HD3D, but it requires separate software that's not free and you need a Monitor or TV that is 3D compatible and come with their own glasses. AMD's method isn't all that great to be honest, more compatibility issues.

most 3d tv's you can enable a 2d to 3d conversion. it is a nice work around until you can come up with the funds to get the hardware to make your computer and monitor do it for you. i used that with my lg 55" for quite a while playing in 3d. it didn't do as great of a job as the hardware and the rest of the nvidia stuff i added to mine, but it wasn't horrible either.
