I'm bothered that they aren't adding an additional legacy server or two. A ton of people quit XIV till ARR's release...I can only imagine how many disconnects I'll be experiencing for the first week, lol.

Oh, I imagine the first week will be pretty smooth sailing.
*Legacy shades on*
Honestly, this is currently my #1 concern. Just having 4 worlds (assuming you want to go to an NA data center) to choose from out of potentially 35+ worlds is alarming, to say the least. I have, at minimum, 30 friends who will be joining me on a legacy world. It's almost like 1.0 players have friends who will want to play now that the game is worth playing (and who didn't play previously). Not everyone is going to want to abandon their progress on their 1.0 characters just because SE doesn't think 1.0 players have friends.

There is no need for server capacity concerns. They can close and open character creation as needed to keep populations under control.
These are NOT the only servers you can transfer to.I was honestly a bit surprised to see that there were only the same 10 servers available for 1.0 players to transfer to.
Where are people getting this idea? They said before there would be new servers in addition to the original ones that we could play on.
As it says in the blog, these are lists of Phase 3 worlds. SE may plan to increase the number of new worlds even during Phase 3. I don't know their capacity, but for Phase 4 and certainly Launch, I think it's likely they'll need to add more new worlds.
For Legacy worlds, the number of characters is already known. There are active characters and a lot more that have been dormant for years. SE probably has analyzed all this to predict how many will reactivate and which region they'll go to. Also included should be enough capacity for new characters on legacy worlds.
This would be a lot of variables to analyze and hopefully they will predict correctly. If not, maybe they could steer some transfers by marking worlds "full" (leaving space for new characters to join), or even adding new a new Legacy world if needed. Of course, this is just my guessing. SE has the plan and I don't know what it is.![]()
This... doesn't really help matters. While I care about server congestion, I care about my friends not being able to create characters on my server even more.
If you can find a quote where they said that there would definitely be new servers that existing players could transfer to, great. If a mod could confirm this is the case even better. All I remember them promising were some servers where everyone was starting from scratch.
Even if your friends make the servers explode (or rather, make them laggy)? That's no fun for anyone.This... doesn't really help matters. While I care about server congestion, I care about my friends not being able to create characters on my server even more.
It was before the legacy designation was mentioned. Then they mention legacy servers, and everyone just assumes that it means those are the only servers we can move to. Prior to this announcement, it was "There are "fresh start" servers that only allow new characters, and then other servers that 1.0 characters can move to." In other words, they originally made it sound like it was the fresh start servers that would be specifically designated. If you can find a quote where they said that there would definitely be new servers that existing players could transfer to, great. "The few.. the proud. The Legacy."
Well yes, but it's a false dichotomy to claim those are the only two options - no friends, or exploding servers. There can also be "enough servers/server capacity so that Legacy folks can play with their friends". Legacy folks are the goodwill ambassadors who, though word of mouth, can help convince people who are leery about giving XIV a second chance. It doesn't seem unreasonable to throw them a bone. :P
I mean, the developers may have already accounted for this and have some estimate of how many players are returning + how many people each of those might convince to give the game a try. I'd just feel more comfortable if there was some kind of confirmation that yes, this issue is on their radar. I've annoyed a lot of friends until they agreed to give ARR a second try, and I'm worried that if there are major problems, they'll say "it was bad then and it's bad now" and be annoyed at me for wasting their time and money. I'm nervous about that, and I'd like some reassurance that this is something the dev team has considered.
So if that's accurate, then anyone can be on Legacy servers, but only new characters can be on new servers. Which seems to square with what has been said. But I really would like it if we could get confirmation of that. :/It was before the legacy designation was mentioned.
