I read in the forums and it really was 50/50. Some are very sad and some are really happy about it so i'm happy that not all JP are like that.NA wanted this too....
And it's not like we played with JPs a whole lot. It was segregated. This whole "international community" is a myth. Unless your idea of "international community" is text you can't read scrolling up on your screen, because it rarely ever went beyond that.
And people say "I play with JPs and they play with me?" Yeah but few if any people from NA/EU could honestly say that they knew who they were or were friends. They played with you because they didn't have a contents finder that could help them distinguish who did/didn't have a JP client.

The forums rarely represent reality. Looking about over my gaming life in FFXIV, I could count maybe a dozen times I'd ever played with JPs. No memory of them ever using Auto-Trans to bridge the gap between languages when seeking a party exists. EU and NA blend together quite nicely on the other hand.
My current shell is the only truly international community I've ever seen with people from all over the world. They all speak very good English though. I'm sure that helps.
If there was an international community that included JP population I never saw it. I'm sure they're very nice, but...
And of course, there's always the factor of the whole latency and ping issue. I think making regional servers was a very diplomatic thing to do. It's not like choosing which server to play on is the biggest and most important decision in the world.
