It's not "British" persay, but it IS how English was more or less spoken back in the medieval/steampunk era.. the American accent developed only in modern times, well after the US declared its independence >.>

So...why wouldn't he have that kind of accent when speaking English? Same for majority of the characters

Hold on now, you're starting to use logic. Haters hate logic.

I don't hate logic, I am challenging the assumptions you are making. This isn't mideval Earth, this is a fantasy realm called Eorzea. Furthermore, whenever Y'shtola or other npcs from 1.0 spoke during cutscenes it was not with a British accent. I was hoping there would be at least one voice actor who seemed to take the role seriously, but they all sounded like they were taking it as a joke. In my opinion, Thancred is neither British nor a lame attempt at a womanizer but apparently the other fans have me out numbered on that opinion.

I've actually heard Thancred talk, and I've heard Shaun imitating him. The reason I'm a fan of Shaun's imitation is because his voice seems to capture and portray Thancred the way I've always seen him: Suave, calm, intelligent, mysterious and a little mischievous. Although his accent does touch on sounding somewhat British, to me it more makes him seem refined; like he's above anything brutish, petty or stupid, like he's a walking lesson on how to have class. It almost makes him seem James Bond-ish. Not to mention the fact that he can kick some serious booty in a fight using nothing but daggers, skill and agility.

All of this, Shaun's voice portrays almost flawlessly. That's why I vote that Shaun voice Thancred. Him sounding "British" didn't really even cross my mind until you said something about it. lol

There are actually different accents and dialects in Eorzea that is reflected in the naming conventions and character "stereotypes" If you read the dialogue for many of the characters in the Limsa Lomina story for and example, you will see it is clearly written for a British type accent. Here is an example:

Ear ya loud an’ clear-like, sir.
But d’ya ‘onestly reckon this plan’s gonna work? Th’ ‘Cuda charts’ve been passed on t’ Travanchet, so it follows that the fishbacks’ll be there waitin’ fer ya men. Thing is...what if they ain’t no match fer ‘em, an’ run?
The name in that post there is Tranvanchet and (to me) it is clearly a French name using their grammar laws and inflection. Thancred did have a speaking role in 1.0 so we do have a precedence set as to the style of voice.

Beyond all that, as voice director, I need to consider the feeling of the character through his voice. I was not looking at accents, more at "does this voice portray the characters qualities" To me, and many fans, Thancred is very suave and possesses a confident charm. Since all we have to act with is our voices, my choice would have been Shaun, even after hearing all the auditions.

But in an effort to remain fair and to also gain some insight from the community who I know loves Thancred, I wanted to post the auditions that we had at the time. Two came in late and one didnt make it in for the options unfortunately but this is the nature of acting. 100 people will try out for a single part, there will be 99 people who wont be happy with the selection.

We do currently have a range of different accents and dialects and will continue to adjust and work towards a varied cast. We are even creating our own language for the Sylphs since they were not supposed to be speaking Eorzean.

Please watch future chapters and look for a variety of accents! Thanks for sharing your concern!
