Think of it as your retainer being a bank. You can all access it, but you'll have separate "accounts" for every character that uses it.
Seems Arkham (quoted below) addressed this in the same way I was thinking about it. If the inventory is separate between them anyways, what's the point of sharing the retainer in the first place?

Even "shared retainers, separate inventory", is still unclear. Why force the other 2 accounts to accept the name and appearance of the 1st's choice of retainers if they're completely independent otherwise? Does this limit # of auction house slots per account instead of per character? Does a retainer have limited # of inventory slots that are shared between all 3 accounts? (i.e. if 100 slots and character 1 stores 50 items, characters 2 & 3 see only 50 empty slots?)
I'm thinking along the same lines as far as limiting how many items we can have up for auction at a time, at least if it's correct to interpret the translation as inventory not being shared. And/or to limit the amount of unique names on retainers? There's got to be some alternate reason...
