I have both standard and CE copies of 1.0. I can't remember if I was prideful and wanting to register straight from the CE, or if I avoided damaging the CE and used the Standard Edition. I know I later opened both, but I can't remember which copy I used for my initial registry.
The Onion Helm is a separate code from the game registry code. The Garlonde Goggles are separate from the game registry code as well. To further prove this fact, I have neither on my main because I failed to register these codes before creating my character (Yru). They wouldn't let us obtain these items on pre-existing characters, only characters created AFTER registering the code, because the items were automatically added to the new characters' inventories (not feasible with a pre-existing character with full inventory).
That being said, I do have the Onion Helm registered, but only because I did so long after the announcement of "2.0" thinking maybe I'd have a second chance to get it. It is still not at all indicative of which of my two codes I'd used when I first registered the game. It does, however, mean I have additional proof to show SE that I bought the CE.
Edit: Furthermore, I just wiped most of my HD to cleanly install Windows 7 because Windows XP is not on the minimum OS requirements anymore. A mere upgrade wasn't working for some reason, so all of my files, including any record of 1.0 registry that might have been on this computer, are forever gone. SE support is my only hope atm.

It can happen. My physical copy of XIV is in another country because they don't ship to Brazil so I had to remote-acquire through a friend in the US. (not CE, though)

I want the FFXIV:ARR Collector's Edition physical bonus items too!
You must purchase a physical Collector's Edition version on PC or PS3 to get the FFXIV:ARR CE physical bonus items. Doing this will also give you access to the pre-order in-game items.
- Buying the PC FFXIV:ARR Collector's Edition will not give you access to the FFXIV:ARR Collector's Edition in-game items. Purchasing the 'Collector's Edition Digital Upgrade' will also be required to gain access to the Collector's Edition in-game items.
- Alternatively, buying the PS3 FFXIV:ARR Collector's Edition and registering it to your existing account will give you access to the Collector's Edition items without the purchase of the 'Collector's Edition Digital Upgrade' as well as being able to play your characters on PS3.

So this confirms the failga that is Square-Enix Marketing. Their only redemption is that the PC CE is slightly cheaper than the PS3 CE, but it doesn't make up the cost of the Digital Upgrade.this is from translationthread

This is a huge issue for me, as a 1.0 non-CE account holder, without a PS3.
Currently my only options are:
$98 AUD (which is already overpriced comparatively to USD) + $20 Digital upgrade = $118 AUD (which is roughly the same in USD)
OR
$118 PS3 CE (which works out to be exactly the same price.. Go figure).
So basically in order for myself, as a PC-only 1.0 non-CE account holder, I am forced to pay a further $20 on top of the already overpriced copy of the CE, if I wanted the physical items (which I do)..
This, is an extremely bad move by the ARR marketing team. So much for looking after their 1.0 players...

I feel your pain, I was pretty excited with getting ready to do my PC CE pre-order (physical items just too good) and just assumed that for 70 bucks+ I'd be able to upgrade my account and get everything. Sadly having to fork out another $20 just for something that is essentially a push-of-the-button to make my account get a CE next to it..pretty much sucks. This is a huge issue for me, as a 1.0 non-CE account holder, without a PS3.

Of course if they don't "fix" this, I'll end up having to fork over the money. But I can see how this will really put a damper on 1.0 players who quit and wanted to come back for ARR after seeing improvements. Not only do they not get a free month for ARR, they might have to fork over extra cash to get the pretty items that everyone else will have.

I'm sincerely hoping this whole thing is an unfortunate misunderstanding, because if it's true SE you just keep continuing your fail train even though you try not to. :S Don't be the one game that won't give ppl their digital items because they didn't apply it SOON enough.
I still want my Asuran armguards on my main character also.... :\

Went out of curiosity to a GameStop and asked how they deal will pre-order codes. He couldn't tell but maybe they send mails a few days before release or so.
I told him about the CE codes and them not being able to put on an existing account. He gave me a strange look and asked why. Then he said why they don't add the possibility to show SE your invoice of the CE and they upgrade your account to a CE one.
Would be a nice move :S
