Yoshida recently posted an update regarding FFXIV 1.0 users being able to try out FFXIV:ARR at launch that I'd like to pass along:

I apologize for the delay in preparing various announcements.
With the beginning of official service on 8/27, we will be implementing a two-week long Welcome Back Campaign for those of you who have a FFXIV 1.0 service account, regardless if you are a Legacy Member or if you have Collector’s Edition/Standard Edition. During this time period you can try out FFXIV: ARR for free, so please take this opportunity to check out the game!
Once the date draws closer we will be announcing the details on the Lodestone as well as sending out an email from the development team.

Wait so 1.0 players are getting the free trial then? i thought if you had a 1.0 service account you couldn't get the free 30 day trial unless you bought the PS3 version of ARR... There's way too much confusion with all this info coming out. :/
If you have a 1.0 account you can't use the 30 day subscription that creating a new account does for you. HOWEVER they announced that they will give a free period for those with 1.0 accounts.
ok well that makes sense then i guess. i just wish things would be a bit clearer from the start. All this confusion is not good for the game at all.
