Well, they've already made the decision and people have already started preordering copies of the game. How are they supposed to change it now without facing further backlash?

People who just wanted the in-game items probably haven't started purchasing the game. So, since there has been no clearing up if pre-order items comes with the game, we can assume you cannot get the items without ordering, so that leaves two questions:

    1. Will they offer the items for a small price to the people who already own the game, like an upgrade option.
    2. If not, will people who pre-order this new copy (most likely because they also want the physical items) be able to link the code to their account and get the items on their current character. This answer is especially important for those who are thinking about purchasing the game again, whether for the PS3 or PC, and the in-game item tips the scale. Obviously a "Yes" answer would tip it in their favor.

From what I understand Preordered games will come with three codes:

    Pre-order early access code
    Pre-order bonus code
    Registration/Product Code

Your preorder early access code and is limited in number and you can only use it before launch...

Your preorder bonus code gets you the items, but you can use it until December 31st. The items are delivered to the account that the preorder bonus is registered to.

According to this information, so long as you have the preorder bonus code, you can choose to put it on any account you want so long as it's a platform/region match. (bonus codes for PS3 and PC are different and don't work cross platform. Same for JP/NA/EU codes. They don't cross regions.)
Your preorder bonus code gets you the items
The registration code allows you to create the service account

If you have a service account already, why not just put your preorder bonus code on your existing account to put those items on your character?

If someone preordered a whole game that they already own for the bonuses, they have only themselves to blame, besides, preorders can be canceled and converted. No one loses anything. If someone really did that, he has nothing to lose and everything to gain.

If, instead, they want the further copy of the game, they're gonna get it, so they lose anything.

If you have a service account already, why not just put your preorder bonus code on your existing account to put those items on your character?
Because unless you want to multibox purchasing a product that you already own doesn't make much sense at all.

The lack of early start for people who bought v 1.0 is very poor judgement. A lot of people bought the CE and SE in 1.0 for the early release and sure we got to play a week early, but look how many left because of that. 3-7 Days of an early start is huge in a MMO. Most of the people who aren't Legacy are going to head to new servers and are now behind up to a week because why should they re-buy the game. I though SE wants its old players to return and try out the game again, those of us who are of a competitive nature don't want to return to a game and be behind everyone by a week.

I've been told to pre-order and register the code, then just cancel the pre-order later. This method while giving those of us non-legacy the pre-order bonus it also takes them away from new players. There is already a divide between legacy and non with a whole lot of "I'm better than you" from them. SE you need to stop making it a bigger divide or you will ruin your own community.

This is causing quite a few of my friends to not even want to give the game another chance, since a late start is massive in a mmo.

Who told you to use pre-order codes that aren't legally yours? If SE found out about it (such as someone else buying the game you cancelled and then going to SE about their "faulty" code), best case scenario would probably have you lose the items. Worst case, they could ban you for using stolen codes. I would NEVER suggest anyone do anything like this and very much hope no one ever does. It just isn't worth it o.O

But back on topic, I'm going to be getting the new ARR CE via pre-order, simply because I want the physical stuff, but I'd happily spend another $5-$10 for my 2nd account to have the pre-order stuff too if that was an option. I hope they at least consider bringing this option in and the sooner, the better.

I've seen it suggested quite a lot. Just another reason for SE to step in and offer it as a service, making money in the process.

Doesn't really matter too much to me.

The things I care about most are the soundtrack, art book, and video. And those will be offered on ebay soon enough, so... yeah. lol

As I've read more comments and user's opinions, I do agree with how Spectre put it~

But I do still believe as a company Square Enix will make more money on those willing to buy a duplicate copy of the game, rather than offering it to those at a much less price.

And while we don't and won't have real numbers to back this up and settle the score- I myself have bought the PS3 Collector's Edition just for the new physical items and pre order items, While my wife bought the regular edition ps3 version just for the pre order items. We're both legacy, and both have the original 1.0 CE.

Asking for a lower price of say 5-10$ just for pre order items means they have to get 3-6 additional upgrades' just to combat one regular game pre-order. And while if they think its worth there while to do so- I still believe even if there would be less players buying an additional copy just for the pre-order bonus they'll end up making more money regardless.

(I know at least 5 others excluding myself from my linkshell who have already bought the new Collector's addition & regular addition with no gain other than receiving the pre-order items)

And while I understand to some this might seem absurd throwing 30-70$ at a game just to receive in-game items and those who will not do this- there's plenty who are and will spend a good sum of money even if its only for the in-game items. Even if there are more potential buyer's wanting to spend less money (ex;5-10$) for the pre-order bonus than those willing to spend 30-70$ they're going to need way more buyers for it. And there are those who are willing to that 30-70 just for those in-game items. So while I don't disagree with the idea of allowing this- I don't see why Square Enix would when they can make more of a profit off of those who would be willing to spend 30-70 on a game simply for the 'pre-order bonus' even if there are less of them because they're buying significantly less assets for more money.

Remember while we are players and love to support our companies and love for them to do stuff for us Square Enix is a business.

    But I guess we'll never /really/ know

If they support it cool- But Square is a company and will do whatever net's them the most money especially when dealing with a game that's already failed once. (And no I do not think they will fail just because they decided to exclude their older player base for 2 pre order in game items lol).

@Kaiyoko: the big money in MMORPG isn't made with the few hardcores, but with the many casuals (and casuals love little cosmetic items).

Your view is skewed by the fact that you're considering your linkshell as a valid statistical pool. It isn't. Your linkshell is made by people that stuck with the game to its end, which means they are the hardcorest of the hardcorer, and not only they are a negligible percentage compared to the full population of those that will have a chance to come back and try out A Realm Reborn, but they also don't represent the average attitude.

Most of the 800,000 people that bought the game initially and then quit don't exactly share the same unabated enthusiasm towards FFXIV, so they won't be nearly as willing to purchase a whole new copy when their trust in the game still has to be restored (which is the whole reason why SE is giving them the game for free).

Those 5 people in your linkshell, even multiplied by all the linkshells that were left at the end of 1.0 aren't exactly statistically relevant compared to that.

And you're not even considering the fact that preorders can be canceled, leaving square enix with nothing at all. If you preorder a game at a third party retalier and then you cancel the preorder, the publisher gets nothing at all.

On top of that those that ordered the collector's edition should not be counted, as they obviously do it for the physical items (which are definitely very compelling, it's a very good CE). If they just wanted the preorder bonuses they wouldn't get a CE, but a standard edition would give them the same result.

Those would still get the CE even if this kind of service was to be offered.

It's exactly because SE is a business that they should do this. Counting on people to repurchase what they already have in large numbers isn't exactly a sound business practice (on top of the fact that it sends a very counterproductive message, as offering a perk and then trying to encourage people not to take advantage of it, by purchasing anyway what they'd get for free isn't a marketing message one normally wants to pass).

Sure, some people in your linkshell may be willing to repurchase it, but people in any linkshell that was left at the end of the game are a drop in the sea of the overall userbase.

Also remember that there's a very relevant element that most people here forget:

By selling a 30 bucks game, Square Enix doesn't gain 30 bucks. You need to take all the printing fees, material costs, distribution fees and the retailer cut off that. It's a miracle if SE gets 10 bucks of net gain per copy from the whole process (probably less, actually).

On the other end, selling only the bonuses for 5-10 bucks means that almost all that money is a net gain, as all you have to subtract from it is the implementation cost for the system to sell the upgrade, which is negligible because they are already making a similar one for the collector's edition upgrade, and this system can simply be added to that.

So it's very likely that the net gain per unit sold would be nearly equivalent or even equivalent with this system, and I'm quite sure no one'll argue that this system would not sell a lot more units than duplicate preorders.
