Why not Red Mage first? It seems wierd to not add in a more prevalant, basic job from the series first, over scholar. I can see not putting in more melee type jobs since the game needs some more mages, but why Scholar and not Red mage? For a specific role fulfillment?

Why RDM? At this point in time what would Red Mage do? Scholar has also been around since the early days (FFIII in terms of playable), so...what's the problem?

Arcanist already took RDM's Enfeeblist role per XI style, prior to XI RDM had abilities and certain spells that are already given as base abilities and traits to class/jobs since 1.x. Scholar has a lot more potential in this game than RDM does to be honest.

What's your point? RDM was in FF1 so it predates Scholar, as does Thief and both were passed up in favor of a job that all it does is amalgamate WHM and BLM together and have a few unique abilities. I honestly would have rather seen another ranged damage dealer like Musketeer over yet ANOTHER caster class. I thought Arcanist rounded out the caster repertoire well enough. Is Scholar just going to be something to fill in the holes when someone doesn't want to play WHM or BLM?

to be fair this is pretty much the description of RDM with swordplay as one of the few unique abilities.

Not to mention Summoner wasn't even one of the original jobs if that's being used to try to exclude Scholar.

    It's a pretty simple explanation.

    We NEEEEED a healer.

The Red Mage fan base has already made it abundantly clear that they will not accept Red Mage as a Back-line substitute White Mage again. Red Mage is a Tri-Class making it next to impossible to balance Offensive Magic, Defensive Magic and Melee. The people have spoken and they want Red Mage to be a Melee. Scholar on the other hand is a Dual Class Mage, no Melee, allowing for the healer side to Flourish without hurting it's offensive side.

I'm thinking they'll make Red Mage into an actual battle mage this time.
