While they're certainly similar looking, there was originally a huge distinction between the two. Thaumaturges use Scepters and Staves. Conjurers use Wands and Radicals.

Here are the definitions for them according to Gamerescape:
    Scepter vs Wand
A scepter is a short rod made of metal and/or bone, within which is housed a medium -- a natural stone imbued with magical properties. Scepters are arms of the Thaumaturge.
A wand is a short rod made of unworked wood which is used to focus aether until it manifests as a desired spell. Wands are arms of the Conjurer.
    Staff vs Radical

A staff is a long rod made of metal and/or bone, within which is housed a medium -- a natural stone imbued with magical properties. Staffs (also called "staves") are arms of the Thaumaturge.
A radical is a long rod made of unworked wood which is used to focus aether until it manifests as a desired spell. Radicals are arms of the Conjurer.
Saying they're the same thing is like saying lions and tigers are the same because they're both felines.
