Which type of diacritic used for Miqo'te names?

Good afternoon lore fans and Ferne,

Reading through the Miqo'te naming convention post I noticed that names were sometimes written with the regular English diacritic ( ' ) and others with the acute one ( ´ ). I'm about to register my character's name for the credits application but this keeps bugging me. Which is the correct way of writting these names? Y'shtola or Y´Shtola?

NOTE: I went ahead and looked up some screenshots of Shtola and she seems to have the regularly used diacritic.

    Thanks in advance.

I copypasted a lot of the dialogue from my chatlog and ended up having to replace all the ones that aren't on the English keyboard (´) with the ones that are ('). Things were ruining my wiki links!

I'd say the regular one, i.e. the apostrophe. The acute accent/diacritic is generally more for combining by putting it over a letter, not for going between the letters as it is for the miqo'te. Plus, depending on the font used the apostrophe may or may not have a slight acute slant to it anyways. And apostrophes have been confirmed as legal characters for names in ARR, presumably in large part for this purpose.

Beats me why they wouldn't just be apostrophes when Moose copied right out of chatlog. It's possible they were converted not to acute accents but to the "smart quotes" apostrophes that try and detect if it's an opening or closing punctuation.

Of course, it doesn't help that the naming conventions post uses both styles interchangeably. But they are referred to as apostrophes there, so I'd stick by my earlier conjecture on chalking it up to typestyle variations.

EDIT: When I first wrote the reply I didn't realize you were the OP, Mos!! Glad to help an LS member :P

    On-topic:
I'd continue to use the one that's on the English keyboard and call it a day. Fernehalwes has referred to it as an apostrophe, and that's what we have on our keymap.

    EDIT:
I think Myr might be right about some of my things getting autoconverted. I've gone from chat log to excel to internet browser to word and back. At any time they could have changed on me. But it's apostrophes.

I didn't even realize we were all from Excalibur, lol. What LS are you guys from and are you converting to a company, as well?

Off-topic: I guess I'll make my lore-seeking alt on Excalibur then. Forgive me for wanting my main to follow my time zone.

On-topic: International keyboards use the apostrophe key to create accented characters. So if I write apostrophe-e, it becomes é. So technically, an apostrophe is actually and accented space. I wouldn't be surprised if this is how the game is recording it, especially given its quirk of needing to accomodate four languages in the same character-set.
And on a related note, if you copy-pasted padjal names from the chat log, their hyphens would vanish. Go figure.

No one has any idea where they'll end up once SE announces what servers are where and what our options are. The best we can do is just try to keep in touch during the process itself instead of trying to anticipate what our moves will be. That's one of the reasons I'm curious about Myr and Mos's plans, though my company is more about the long-standing community and values than the usual rotating door of cooperative attainment of personal goals (diagonal v. horizontal progression without stagnating to horizontal), so that's going to have to be priority #1.

Mos and I are part of Rendezvous Zone (the other one in my sig is just a small one of me and a handful of IRL friends). We are pretty tight knit and will be making it a FC, but also plan on keeping an LS as well for acquaintences from other FCs. Not entirely sure how that will pan out, since no one gets to really see how FCs work in detail until beta phase 3 happens. And who knows about server... we had a vote and it's overwhelmingly in favor of a NA data center if that's what it comes down to since we're mostly Americans, but we don't know exactly how those will work yet either. They're uncertain times.

    Slightly more on topic:
The reason I suggested the smart quotes autoconversion thing is because I used to run into that all the time at my last job, I would be sent Word documents that needed to be converted into HTML (a monthly newsletter type thing), and various characters like that would end up making some gibberish like &e>> in the middle of sentences.

I did a lot of NPCs screenshots search and all I found was names with the regular one. Is pretty sad because I actually like the other one. ;_;. It was confusing on the name convention post and is not used only once but a few. Anyways I'm pretty sure apostrophe are the correct ones like Anony and Myr think.

    Now off-topic.

Catapult I wouldn't recommend you to just settle for Excalibur yet. Like Anony said we don't know what will happen to the servers. Is best to wait for SE's official information about it. For example the LS that I belong to will probably be shifting to a US based data center server. If it happens that Excalibur is one then we might stay but we might just decide to go to another server instead. Right now Excalibur under our names just means that we were born there lol

Anony as for FC for Rendezvous Zone, like Myr said. I think it is the ultimate goal for every well established linkshell ^^. /firedance
