Edit: went on for so long I forgot I'd quoted someone. Yes, it's there to keep 1.0 players from disrupting the natural growth of new economies by spontaneously flooding the markets with items an gil obtained in 1.0, oblivious to the true value of either.

For instance, Ash Logs might be much easier to obtain in ARR than in 1.0, but I wouldn't know how to calibrate that if I didn't obtain in the new system, so any guess at a supply rate is unfounded. On top of that, we don't know how useful Ash will be compared to other lumbers, making any guess at demand unfounded. Basically the new value of any given item is completely unknown, and there will be a typhoon of 99stacked items like this simultaneously and spontaneously introduced to the world at launch, and the resulting gil storm will be fierce.

I think the original topic, however, is that a lot of the 1.0 servers will be occupied by 1.0's inactive players. Unfortunately there's no way to get around this, because anyone with a 1.0 account needs to be able to access the game or it wouldn't be fair. I just hope we don't wind up with empty-ish servers because they're reserving 60% of the slots for people who aren't coming back. Or worse, for cancelled RMT accounts. We all know how they loved to make tons of accounts >.<
