My only opinion is that from what I understand they are gouging the entire class and battle system, which would suggest to me this is a "patch on the tire" until they can replace the whole tire in a few months.

Small, probably. As for angry, forums are never a statistical representation of a game's population.
Luckily, I would add, because if the community I find in game every day was in any way similar to the forums I would have quit long ago.
Outside the AM magic I do not think the animations of the spells on ffxiv are that bad done they just look horrible on small mobs. But on larger mob they are fairly decent looking at least on par with tier 1 and 2 from XI. I will have to see what they look like bigger, but honestly completely redesigning them seems sorta stupid to me, unless we are talking about AM.
Funny colored wind (for every element just different color) with annoying sound fx is FAIL for spell animation.
FFXI spells were too short and rather lackluster compared to their offline counterparts. I always attributed this to hardware limitations, so it wasn't a big deal. In FFXIV the spells are toned down even more than FFXI. Perhaps Tanaka wanted to go with a more 'realistic' look with this game, but I don't think it was a good idea.
I suspect that a large-scale revamp of the magic effects is planned but won't happen until after the class system is addressed. So as others have said, this is just a small tweak to bridge the gap.
How about battle sounds? I'd like to have grunts and screams when hitting or being hit instead of mutely swinging my axe. How about the barbaric yawp marauder ability? You'd think there should be some form of shouting but there isn't.Resizing clearly means they're paying attention to the fact animations need a change and there will no doubt be more done than resizing of the particle effects (a lot of magic in general is just "small") -- it's like them saying they'll add new areas and people expect them to not add NPCs or music simply because they didn't mention it.
However, a lot of FFXIV's effects are more on the "real" side because of mocap they did for animations, whereas FFXI's focus on the particle effects because the animations themselves were very plain.
While all the information is nice I still don't feel like SE is being transparant enough with us. They drop some snippits of information and we rarely hear back from about the issues we adress with them.
We hear the odd "We are looking into it" but we never hear there opinions on the matter. Maybe it's just me looking for a more personable aproach to the issue where as SE "and the Japanese player base I'm betting" prefer the cold-hard-facts kind of aproach where we don't ever get to hear.
Why they are doing something
How they feel about it
Whats down the line
Thats the stuff I'd like to hear at least once a week. The dev letters are nice but they just feel like someone is holding Yoshi-P on a leash and only letting him go so far. Break the chain Yoshi become UNLEASHED!
You do realize that this is completely impossible.....in the SP FF games of old you switched to a battle plane to fight, everything was secluded to one small area, so you could flood it with a tsunami or have a huge meteorite fly through the air to decimate enemies.....I don't see that happening in an MMO. You guys really need to get your heads out of the clouds and start realizing that this dev team is comprised of HUMAN BEINGS and not supernatural beings capable of granting any wish you decide to come up with. Cut them some slack. As an archer, the effects look ok, but the damage is poor. An attack made with Multishoot *2 + Ferocity + Raging Strike it´s more powerful than any of the specials with the same buffs. Also, the difference in damage between the specials is almost nothing!
About the video showing the magic FXs, it looks so sad. One of the factors that made me love the FF series was the impressive FXs that accompany the magic attacks: floor breaking, enemies flying thru air, massive meteorites falling, huge tsunami flooding, Spikes of ice piercing enemies ...that is the game I was expecting.
This fix it´s not enough, please dear dev team, just plug a SNES and put any of those marvelous old FF games and then re-think about it!
At this point, you're playing their game for free....they aren't charging you, and hell they're still coming out and trying to right their wrongs, trying to use more communication for communication sake (even when it was expressed that the Japanese playerbase could care less about said communication)....what the hell else do you want? Seriously. This whole thread is FULL of whining, and complaining, about one little fix they decided to implement....it's not like we've waited 6 months and it was like "Our first patch since getting on the project is going to be animation resize....", because that's how most of you are acting, like you haven't been given anything, or shown anything, and they simply aren't doing anything. To be honest and frank, we're damn lucky that we've gotten as much as we have in 4 months from Yoshi's team. It takes a hell of a long time for a whole new team to come onto a completed project after getting told to essentially tear it down and rebuild it, and then go and learn one of the most convoluted and annoying game engine's that I've ever seen.
It's not going to take 4 months.....it's not going to take 6 months. Like others have said, the game was in development for 5 years. You do realize that most of that time was work on the damn game engine.....after developing an engine for that long, you all expect people that have never touched it to come in and be able to mold the universe in 4 months? Not to even get into the heinous amounts of code there is for this game, the way the files are horribly packed, etc etc etc. Come on already.
Last but not least, to the people that keep saying "Well XI had this!!".....this isn't XI, it won't ever be XI, they weren't trying to make XI. XI's graphics were also taken in a different direction art-wise. It was less.....realistic is the word I'll use. XIV's direction was taken in a different direction, and it's not exactly hard to see, but you guys keep wanting XI for some damn reason. It's a SPELL EFFECT.....it's not like we're talking about getting a whole new area, or Ishgard being opened up, cause then I'd agree....but it's a damn spell effect....like honestly, how much is everyone going to whine at this point? Cause complaining about every single thing about the game isn't going to do much....if you hate everything about the game currently, I can tell you that it's not going to 100% change....ever.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^If this came with a disclaimer letting us know that it was only a temporary solution while they worked on redoing the battle and spell effects then I think it would go over a lot better. As it stands now just releasing this piece of information by itself without any context makes it pretty disappointing, at least to me.
We need new weapon skill animations, and magic... that being said i understand the current class system is going to be redone, maybe they are waiting for that due to the fact that each weapon skills would/might need an animation for each class that can use it. So IMO they are waiting to implement real classes before they change WS animations.
But SE if you think blowing the size of the current magic up thats fine, but you do need to redo the animations on the magic. It looks like crap compaired to FFXI. With the current graphics of FFXIV we really were looking to be blow away.
Extremely sad about this, is this how it goes down at SE:
"Aww people unhappy with x content"
"MAKE IT BIGGER!"
So stupid.
