I wonder by who...

Please SE, let us select Japanese audio and English subtitles. I don't think it'd be hard (as a matter of fact, I know it wouldn't), and it would make a *lot* of people happy.

Didn't they say they would let us do so in one of the earlier letters?

Oh thank you SO much.
*does a happy dance*
I worked for 6 years in anime voice acting. Despite that i will not, ever, be able to enjoy anime in any other way than subbed.
Japanese voice acting is, quality-wise, incomparable to any western counterpart. Italian voice acting (on which I worked) comes somewhat close due to an extremely old and rooted tradition (that English voice acting lacks sorely, due to the fact that they don't need to voice Hollywood movies), but even then, I just can't.
Even American video games, in many cases, sound much better dubbed in Japanese >_>
The reason for that imho is largely because in Japan, anime is not seen as something solely "for kids" and also no opinion that "kids won't notice anyway" if the voice acting is bad. Not to say all non-Japanese voice acting is bad. The majority is though, especially for anime.
For me, it's also the fact the voice actors often don't make any effort to pronounce foreign names properly.
