    Mumble mumble...

    Who killed Niellefresne?
What had seen in the tomb?
    Who was the spy?

I was re-watching all starting cutscenes of Ul'dah...

First, Nielle & Co seems they have organized the goobbue's escape, Corguevais pointed out that Nielle used the same horn he will use against Nielle, Lhammin, Ascilia and us.
Probably is true. If You rewatch the first cut scene (the parade) you see a mammet use an horn, and after goobbue break the barrier.
Like Thancred said after the gambling with Nielle, seems that escape was a masterminded plan from Syndicate for fear people and save them. (with the accident of Warburton)

But, I really think Corguevais could be a spy of Empire, even Nielle told that he speak and wear like a Garlean (and we can see it all... the leggings, the colours... really similar to a Garlean), but i don't think was Corguevais to kill Nielle...

If we watch the Echo cutscene where we see the kill we can notice that the killer have a black cowl and... black leggings! (but metallic) instead Corguevais had it normal leggings (black and red), and if we compare the height with Nielle, seems the killer was an hyur and not an elf (even the head haven't the pointed ear of an elf)...

So maybe Corguevais is innocent? and someone other is the really spy?

What I think is that Courgevais is an Empire Spy but not the only.. maybe he had a companion.. and he stolen the body of warburton to prevent thaumaturge and Nielle to discover the secret...

    Buuuut.. what is the secret?
Ascilia and Corguevais told us that is worse of the Empire... but surely is related with Echo and Starshower... cuz when we had used echo for nielle death (touching the broken crystal) seems even thancred saw it... and after he understood we used the power he run out seeing the second starshower... after he told that THIS is the danger.. but still we don't know exactly what is it.. probably related with Primal and Ascian and the Mother Crystal.. but more clue will be available with 2.0

For the Cave-in I really don't know if Corguevais have done something... but when the miners taken him to the guild Seserukka told that onlu Father can deal with trespassers... Who is the Father? :O

(sorry if I was confusing but i'm not really good with english :x )

If Courguevais was a Garlean spy he was a terrible one. If I were going to be an American spy, the last thing I would do would be don a cowboy hat and spurs and an shirt with an American flag on it to do my business.

Those words you heard about the Garleans making the beast break lost, Corguevais walking and talking like a Garlean and then brainwashing Ascilia, those are the beginnings of a cover up. There IS a Garlean spy, but their attempts to find him ended up with Niellefresne, the one who knew the most, getting offed and his family losing all position.

You're right, this DOES have something to do with the Crystal Tower Ascians and primals.

Yeah you're right but it's a game and of course we don't knew how a Garlean was until last quest ^^

BTW best spy is who say "I'm a spy!"! XD

re-btw, I don't think Corguevais brainwashed Ascilia, she is a child, orphaned.. her feelings are really simple: before she hate Corguevais cuz he couldn't prevent the accident, after she get hate versus Nielle & Co cuz she discover they have organized everything.. and at the end when Corguevais uses the Horn to call the coblyns he leave Ascilia there.... If he really wanna return Ascilia to Ala Mhigo... Of course doesn't leave her there :v

So, for me, I see either Corguevais and Nielle like "villain" (surely big word) cuz Nielle is just a Piece of the Syndicate, and he want only the Uldah welfare.. (and in a normal society this is... bad ) and Corguevais is just a semi-really-bad/good spy

The only one Who I trust is Thancred *-*

Spoiler: At the end we discover the real villain is.......... Thancred! :OOO MIND BLOWN! (hmmm... casualty? He's a Hyur! Maybe He killed Nielle :OO and He know everytime, everything! He is an unknown for uldahns, like a new spy! ...... *mumble* *mumble*)

I was always under the impression that the original 1.0 storyline would have had some kind of similar Calamity befall Eorzea..nothing large scale like Bahamut, but enough to risk the safety of the towns and whatnot. Maybe the awakening of all the Primals, and the Garleans waging war against them or something?

As for Courgevais, I seriously doubt he's the Garlean spy. It's too easy. The only thing that is certain is that he knew Warburton, and speaks as if they were old comrades...and we know Warburton and Ascilia were from Ala Mihgo.

I've been rewatching the story in French to see if I can glean any extra tidbits (I've done this after realizing discrepancies between localizations when all the ruckus over the Commemorative Coin came up XD)

    Starting here:
    http://youtu.be/2mHD3cSMYWs?t=1m50s

Courgevais says, "L'Empire? ...Imbecile." (The Empire? ...Idiot (fool, imbecil)

Then Ascilia follows with "Ce n'est pas l'Empire! C'est quelque chose de bieeeen plus effrayent!" (It's not the Empire! It's something even scarier!)

In the English text, Courgevais simply just says "the Empire?" which can be ambiguous sort of..but the French text, by adding the word "imbecile", he quickly dismisses Nielle's words as folly.

Of another note, although it doesn't affect the overall story, Ascilia's words to F'lhaminn (the same cutscene) are somewhat different:

    English:
Ascilia: You...You killed my father? It was you? How could you!? Get away from me! Just leave me alone! You...you murderer!

    French:
Ascilia: Je ne veux plus te voir! Je deteste cette Cite! Je veux rentrer chez moi!
(I don't want to see you! I hate this city! I want to go home!)

Not that this necessarily contributes to anything, but Greinfarr was also featured in the Gladiator class quests. There was a fight with a lot of money riding on it between himself and J'moldva. (the Miqo'te featured in the Lancer class quests) He helped her escape to Gridania after she "lost" the match.

Nice write up. I've never experienced the Ul'dah side of things pertaining to the story, so it was interesting to see they have their own lingering questions. Who killed Niel is probably the biggest one. Also when you mentioned that "something much worse than the Empire" was coming, that seemed to be a pretty obvious (well, after the fact anyway) foreshadowing of the Ascians. Ferne/Yoshi-P have also mentioned they will return in the new main storyline, so it'll be interesting to learn more about them.

But ascians seems danger but not the danger they are looking for.. maybe related with ascians.. Cuz I think ascians was in the world for a lot of time.. not just popped now, so they are a danger already known...

Oh yes, I have a quest that still wonder me... but the storylines are all lived in past? the present is Minfilia Right?

Thanks for the French Translations Vil! It really helps to see that Corguevais is pretty much a pawn for the scheming trio.

    Re: Greinfarr.

It does appear that he got his glory after the sordid affair of Niellefresne. He's a hero by the time you get into Ul'dah. Greinfarr, in the association of Niellefresne, was talking like he was happy to be exiled because of his poor behavior. Looks like the murder of Nielle made him sit up a little straighter and cooperate with the establishment.

He also appears in "Struck through the Heart" in an echo. You see him kneeling over Niellefresne and listening to Coulberneaux talk to him about Lolorito guarding the hearstrike. After he admits to not being able to stab his brother's body to end his stasis, Greinfarr says that Nielle was his friend and he would do anything for him.

That annoys me because he didn't stop Nielle that day when he had the chance because he was too scared or something, sending Thancred to do it.

Also when you mentioned that "something much worse than the Empire" was coming, that seemed to be a pretty obvious (well, after the fact anyway) foreshadowing of the Ascians. Ferne
I don't think Ascians are the great danger in the Ul'dah questline. They don't make an appearance at all. There's no primals for them to be chasing after. And the horn used to shake the Goobbue awake doesn't appear to interest them.

My only theory is that it relates to the original Dalamud story. The red moon was going to have another purpose outside of Bahamut. In other Final Fantasies, the Crystal Tower is directly related to the awakening of a dead mage or king that has been sleeping/dead a long time (FFIII). Another references to sleeping/dead powerful people also reference moons and meteors ((FFIV)).

Warburton, Corguevais and Ascilia all flee to Ul'dah to warn them of the Garleans coming. Why would the Garleans bother with Ul'dah? Thancred says that it's related to the fact that they are perfecting a means of resurrecting the dead. But why would they care? Well, if Ul'dah caught wind of Meteor's magic, they might try and resurrect the old mage/magic themselves and use it to rule over and even possibly to destroy the entire Empire. That would certainly make the Garlean's very irritated. The "Garlean Spy" then would be working to prevent them from ever using that ability and/or claim it for themselves.

When the seal is broken over the falls and the primals are released, you see those dark clouds and the meteor shower occur for the second time. Erik, the NPC fromt he Monk Quests, tells you that silvertear falls is very close to the the tomb of Xandes (aka the Crystal Tower) itself and that the chaotic state of the aether in Mor Dhona is the the result of the Tower, not the ceruleum explosion that released the primals (Note that the aether in Mor Dhona is purple, not the usual blue.) The Empire may have gone there in an attempt to find the tomb and gotten more than they bargained for.

Because these things are kinda happening at the same time, there's a possibility that they are connected. Exactly how will have to be confirmed some other time.

Others more familiar with the Ul'dah story have said Ascilia is Minfilia.

I think at that point, Greinfarr felt it was way out of his hands and sought the help of someone who was more knowledgeable.

In Calamity Cometh CS 9, Thanny does say that Qoqoba and Greinfarr are trying to break through the main door to gain them entry...that's when Thanny discovers the lights on in the Crypt..and acting on his suspicion, goes down there and discovers Nielle already dead.

So Greinfarr WAS trying...he was just trying to gain entry through the main doors. lol
