My guess here is that people can spend up to a good 30-45 minutes making sure every physical detail is how they want it, while the naming portion is not only a few keystrokes away, but also often right at the end of the creation process. I agree, personal responsibility is a really big thing here, but there are still going to be folk that call a GM because they screwed up, and then get mad and blame SE . I would count on it that you can rename your character though, it's not completely set in stone but SE have stated many times that they'd like to give this to us, and it is possible

You wouldn't need to change anything, but you'd need to assume that NIX was one of the newer families.

The only real-world examples I can find of Selphy are from Pokemon, where it was created from selfish, or Selfie, which is a term used to describe a self-taken picture of you - so we can just assume it's random phonemes in Eorzea :P

Nix's most common associations are "no, or nothing," (alternative spelling of nichts), to make nothing (nix on the picnic baskets), and its Latin meaning, snow. Unless your name was once... Selphy van Nix! ... RUN! SHE'S A SPY!
