Question about Benchmark ratings

On the very bottom of the Benchmark site page, they have listed some ratings for how well your computer will likely be able to handle FFXIV:ARR when it is available.

The highest listed rating is for 7000 or more on which they say "easily capable of running the game on highest settings".

The lowest listed rating is for under 1000 on which they say "Does not meet specifications for running the game".

There are a total of 8 rankings.

However, they do not state what settings these rankings apply to.

I believe the default preset is "Medium 1280x720". I tend to believe that may be the settings to which these ratings apply, but it does not actually say.

When I run the benchmark at the preset "Medium 1280x720" with no other adjustments to setting details, I get a score of over 10000 (and the results indicate a frame rate in the 90s), which would put me in that top ranking I noted above.

When I run the benchmark at the preset "Maximum 1920x1080" (the resolution I have set on my Windows Desktop using a HDTV connected with a HDMI cable), the score comes up around 3200 (with a frame rate listed at around 26 in the results). Using this score, the rankings state "Capable of running the game on default settings. Consider switching to higher resolution depending on performance".

So what is the benchmark really trying to tell me?

Without a statement of which settings those rankings apply to, it's not very clear.

Well the scores are relative to the settings you pick. So if you're barely pushing a score of 1000 on Medium settings, chances are the game is not going to run really well for you.

I'm guessing the first reply I see above either mis-read the score number I said I got on medium 1280x720 or assumed I made a typo. It is not a typo. It really was above 10000 (as in Ten Thousand). The one score I remember at that setting was actually 10750.

Either some form of statement on which settings should be used to compare to those rankings, or some adjustment to the ranking description to account for different settings would be much better.

I am tending to believe that the 3200 score I got on Maximum 1920x1080 can also mean I can run the game at maximum settings. But that is not made clear in the current document.

It means you should be able to play the game at max settings at 720.
And you should be able to play the game at default settings at 1080.

Benchmarks are to determine at which specification you should set the game for best overall gameplay.

For example you got over 10k on medium on 720 that is way to high of a score which means you can play it at a higher setting, than you tried with everything on maximum and got around 3.2k which is alot lower. Which means you dont want to play the game on medium settings cause your computer would kill the game, but you also don't want to play the game at maximum settings cause the game would kill your computer. So you would want to play around with the settings a little bit and find a place that is inbetween medium and maximum. Judging by what you say I would start with 1080, and maybe do medium settings at that resolution.

I was using 1000 at Medium as an example. All I was trying to point out is there is a scoring matrix on the benchmark page, and that scoring matrix is applied to whatever setting you pick. As the poster above me pointed out, if you're getting 10000 on Medium at 720 resolution, you'll want to keep increasing the quality of the graphics until you reach a happy medium. 3000 at max settings at 1080 resolution will be playable but you might not have a desirable frame rate. Best thing to do is try it out at max settings and then if it doesn't play well enough for you, start scaling it down from there.

Just by messing around with the benchmark on various settings, I think you'll have a good framerate running the game on the High preset at 1080 resolution.

Just a hint what the benchmark tell you is not always what you can really play in game

I am on Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) with Intel Core i7 X 980 3.33GHz, 12gig RAM with NVIDIA Geforce GTX 650 connected to a HDTV via a HDMI cable with 1920x1080 resolution on the Desktop.

The system is about 2.5 years old (bought only a little bit before the V1.0 Open Beta) though the graphic adapter is newer because the original one had a fan that went bad (and I wanted a little better graphic performance anyway). The graphic adapter is still not the very best around, but it seems to be ok for what I do with it. The CPU was one of the best at the time I bought the machine, but of course there are better ones around now.

I hope that's enough to evaluate.

Your fine i have a 450GTS and play at max on 1440x900 if you get into beta. Just see what setting you can play at a 650 is powerful enough for FFXIV if my 450GTS is doing ok i think your 650 would do better.
